I think your problem could be that your trying to much to go for the big hit or the big check (like over extending in your poke check or whatever check your throwing) then the attack man simply pulls a dodge and burns you. So instead of trying to go for the big hit every time, just work on positioning, and the big hits will come.

Big hits don't win games, but solid defense does. Work on your positioning, footwork, speed, and checks.
I'm assuming you're playing varsity now. Guys are going to be able to anticipate your checks, be a lot faster, and have much better stick skills.

Thats sums up what you should do.
As cali said just work on the finer points of defense. If you know how to position yourself correctly, have great footwork, good speed and good checks you will be set. You'll always be ready to set the nice check, make the good defensive play and help your team win. Don't focus on killing the other team, it always hurts more if your pretty physical yet beat them badly by playing a great game and shutting their offense down.

things like that generally happen when you move up in levels...
happened to me a lot this year...
Moving up from box to the US stuff, I couldn't get away with trying to knock guys around with a sold cross check... I always got caught lunging and out of position... same thing happened to me in the NLL combine... guys are just way too quick and agile to just beat on or try to get a big hit on...
you really have to get back to the basics, and work from there... remember, good defense is all about body positioning, and using your hands... not about using your stick..your feet do about 95% of the work and the rest is in the hands...

Save big hits for the coma slid. Chances are if the player you're charging is looking anywhere but in the complete opposite direction your coming from, he'll dodge you. Peripheral vision is specifically specialized to recognize motion, so even a slight turn will let him know you're coming.
Work on regular defense, get quicker and faster, and don't go out of your way to try and lay kids out.
