i know its not gonna affect my answer but itll be easier because they may have seen our helmets...

so basically, we have ridells. problem is that they are custom painted to match the football teams helmets. our issue is that people dont want to use them and the school is forcing us to use them....

my question is that if the shells are a general match (painted color vs. stock cascade plastic colors) would you allow them in a game? say if at least 10 of 25 had 1 helmet in a royal blue and black combination and the other 15 had a custom "kentucky blue" (pretty deep blue with a flake paint).

believe me, i know all the helmet rules, but im just askin for a refs point of view.

I am a section 1 referee, and I don't think anyone cares if the shell colors are not an exact match.

I'm not a section 1 official - but I'm not going to have an issue with different shades...as long as they are not significantly different. There have been threads discussing helmet colors. You wouldnt want to create barriers for new teams in economically depressed areas.

Why don't you want to use the Ridell's?

I have heard from multiple sources the ridell helmets are safer than others.

And even if ruled illegal, the only penalty is that you start the game with the opponents in possession.

our school is still supplying us with reconditioned riddells that have been around since 2004. the problem is that the padding system is the older system that is missing a piece for the sides of the ear....i think they call them the z pads. we had a concussion issue....5-8 to be exact....last seasons and we requested new helmets and they said yes, now they say no....parents are pissed off and were trying to do something about it but we arent getting too far in having the school order new ones.

EHS,

You had 5-8 concussions on your team last season? That is a hell of a lot of concussions. We are going to have to call your games tighter. How do they happen?

Also, check your PM.

i checked it, and it happened because kids got hit and went hard onto the ground. the padding system didnt have the correct ear pads and most of the concussions were from side impact.

Yeah I'm on the same team as him and everyone on our team hates the Ridells. Uncomfortable first of all, they hurt to just wear them sometimes, and then they're not very safe obviously...not to mention its heavy and i personally dont like the vision...

And 5-8 concussions...thats including ones where you dont necessarily black out, so it might have not been as noticeable to you (woodenstick).

he makes a point....included in that was mine in preseason and a few of them were the same....we get hit (mine was from a shot to the head) and we dont feel much for awhile, then we got ridiculous headaches.

these werent like violent hits (2 were but they healed quickly). these were hits that were completely legal and when someone landed their head hit hard off the ground.
