Well how big are you? If your a small freshman they probably wont move you up.

Play as many games with your team in the fall and in the winter as possible, and gert to know your coach, i started varsity as a freshman, and those two really helped me with that, play all out every second you can.

work hard on your own time as well... the players that do well are the ones who push themselves and practice ALL the time...

Ya so your big enough to play with varsity, you should also look into working out at the gym.

speed, hustle, and ability to learn are all huge plusses when trying t move up.

I'd play a lot of wallball to make sure your stick stills are excellent. They can't put you on the varsity team unless you are very comfortable with both hands.

Also I'd work on correct form for your checks. One thing that really ticks off a coach is a guy who can't play defense with out getting penalties for stupid things.

And, most of all, work hard. A coach will take a guy with less talent and more fight over a guy who is a little more talented but is not dedicated more times than not. Show him that you're going to work hard day in and day out

Why don't you ask your brother? He most likley knows what the coach is looking for in defence and LSM, so ask him.

Does your brother have any tape of last year? Studying sets and tendancies of teams that you will be playing will give you a half second advantage when time comes. As a freshman entering varsity that will be an edge that you'll need. It will also give you an idea of what the coach will be expecting of you and the defensive sets and clears that you will be learning or incorperating into your game.
Having a clear idea and grasp of what you will have to do, will make you a much stronger candidate for the team. It will also show the coach that you have taken an interest in his systems which is important.
Getting players to buy into a team system can be the hardest part of coaching.

size doesn't matter at all, I made varsity as a freshman when I was 5'6" 125, max quinzani did it at 5'6" 120, sean morris did it at 5'7" 135

im 5 7 145.your not undersized. i started on varsity last year for my school has d and some lsm. doing extra stuff with the team, like weight lifting and conditioning show that your dedicated and a hardworker. but above all, hustle and heart are what will land you on the team

Conditioning is key. If your coach sees you outrun many of the seniors in sprints and such he's going to be impressed whether he likes it or not. Do suicides and other cone drills. Make sure you can just run the field forever nonstop.

you have the size, our team captain is a short D guy hes like 5'7 but he has great stick skills and he is even going d1. Just work on your stick skills, get to know your coach, play as many winter/fall ball games with your team and show off. Also how established is your team and do they have a need for long poles

I agree with everything you just said except for show off. Coaches hate players when they show off.
