Hey I am curious because sometimes I see defence men who look like they do not have any pads on at all. Is this legal? Sometimes I also see people just wearing sweatbands on their elbows. If that is not legal either than what is the smallest possible legal armpad?

You have to have a pad on the arm. Until they define it more clearly, that's it. Most would rule that a sweatband is not a pad.

ILF rules don't requier arm pads... (but i don't know a single field player not wearing them)

I've seen my share here in Canada, typically long poles. However i have also seen the welts on thier wrists and foreams.
I would never play without them.

gait flares are like just a little strip of a thing i would almost say smaller than a sweatband, those are legal? like for a goalie whos in a league that requires all players to wear arm pads?

Again, the rules do not define arm pads. Thus, it is up to the judgment of the official whether something constitutes an arm pad. We cannot give any rulings because there is no objective standard.

Goalies are allowed to wear as much protection as they want, however I don't see many goalies walking around with elbow pads.

well usually i dont wear anything except helmet, throat guard, cp and gloves, with a cup but in a small scirmage thing i hope to be attending it says that ALL (in captial letters lol) players must wear arm guards, so i was just curious, to prevent anything being called, when i could of avoided it.

I would say about 40% of players in England don't seem to wear them ever. But I would also say that only about 5% of players in England wear any form of shoulder pad. and about 40% don't wear a box either.

Please note - these percentages are from MY experience and are not actual scientific fact (before anyone jumps on me lol)

1. For high school, goalies are not required to wear armpads (or shoulder pads for that matter), everyone else is.

2. A lot of older players don't wear shoulder pads. Only an idiot goes without arm pads, especially for your elbows. One out of four players today doesn't know that you aren't allowed to stick check forearms and elbows. 2.9 of the other 3 do it even though they know it isn't allowed.

i wear the gait flare arm pads. they are actually really nice because they are simply a hard elbow cap. its really nice against the direct hits, not so much against crazy attackmen wailing their sticks around. oh i play defense not goalie btw.

The smallest, least restrictive, legal elbow pad is the Warrior Players Club 6.0 Neoprine Defensive Sleeve. EIther that or the Brine Supercrosse Elbow Guard. Which is essetially just and elbow cap on a neoprine sleeve.

Well at this Jamboree here for clubs team is Nor Cal. There was a defender who wasn't wearing arm pads or arm guards. I asked the ref if we had to wear them, he said, "No you don't have to."

As we state repeatedly here on this forum, the rulings of a particular official have little or no bearing on whether something is in fact legal or illegal.

Since this was a club tournament, they may not have been playing by NCAA or NFHS rules. But under NCAA and NFHS rules you have to have arm pads. Someone could host a tournament where they said you had to wear purple socks but that helmets were illegal; we can't account for every crazy thing a tournament organizer decides to do.

And in addition most refs dont see weather it is arm or hand and will not throw a flag so its no risk to hit the arm...
