Ugh i just started playing lacrosse last year, sophmore year of high school i made jv and about 4-5 games into the season i tear a ligiment in my knee and im out for the season. Ok now im a junior and basically i have to make varsity but i feel so behind.. I play defense and when i go to the offseason practicies we practice one on ones and other stuff like that.. I always get beat by the varsity guys maybe a select few jv guys too which is really disapointing =/ like im pretty big (not fat, musclear) i guess i could be faster but i dunno if its my footwork thats lacking.. i know the slides pretty well but i do miss a few =/ what should i focus on training and how can i do it?

haha i mean not to just point out the obvious or anything, but obviously work on strengthening the muscles around the knee as much as possible

great reply.. but a really good thing for you is to keep your cardio up and just lift! If you are in high school im taking it they have a workout program and its probably best you follow it. I dont think your coach would like you doing something else. But having good cardio is a great advantage. and if it is your footwork then search the boards for bfs dot drill, it works wonders. plus you probably just have to shake off the rust.
and remember hard work beats skill, so dont be so down on yourself

Be an athlete and the coach can show you the rest.
My guess it's probrably your footwork. You might be getting caught flat footed once they start making a move and you try to lunge out at them.
Just ask your coach what he sees you doing wrong.

When playing defense on somebody you want to force them one way or another. Force them the way you like to play them or to their weak hand. When you just square up to them and let them choose you have to be more reactive than aggressive. When you force them one way you know where they are going and it is much easier to play one on one defense with them.

Making them go one way is right. But a little something better is to make them go inside you, not over the top. If you can keep them under you and you still get beat, you've got a slide coming to put em down. If you get beat over the top it's a goal every time.
