First thread...

When you go to your backyard, or to a local building with a huge brick face to play wallball, how do you do it (for lack of a better term)? I know wallball isn't a very complicated thing, but how would you throw and catch it?

Do you fling the ball as hard as you can and catch it w/o drawing back to work the pocket a little?

Do you lazily toss the ball against the wall and catch it? Do you even follow through with the throw?

Basically, do you play wallball for fun, to work in your stick, as just something to do when you're bored, etc.? For goalies, would you chuck it into the wall like a crazed phsyco and catch it to practice hard shots?

Do you bring pads, for the extra protection?

What does this simple thing mean to you?

I searched and couldn't find anything in the first 150-odd results. I mainly made this thread for people who come and ask, "I just _______, so what should I do?" or "How should I practice doing ______?" By the way, should I somehow make this a poll?

I do a simple-ish one, because I almost never have any time.

24 tosses left & right to warm up, 12 each hand
50 hard throws left and right to kinda wake up, 25 each hand
24 quickstick r & l, 12 each hand
24 one handed r and l, 12 each hand
30 dodge and throw 15 each hand alternating different dodges
50 BTB, 25 each hand
the last part is shooting into a net
dodge your way from the opposite end of your yard, like in a game, and then:
20 run around the crease BTB 10 ea hand
30 quickstick (get a friend to toss it to you if you can) 15 ea hand
and 50 over-hand bounce shot/corners/off-side hip 25 ea hand.

Thanks,

pick a spot on the wall and practice hitting it over and over again and you catch the ball like you would catch an egg so you give with it heres a routine you can do

Quick stick – 50 right, then 50 left (no cradle)

One hand quick stick- 50 right, then 50 left (no cradle)

Quick stick- change hands each time you throw the ball while the ball is in the air- 50 right, then 50 left ( no cradle)

Both hand catch and cradle- 50 right, then 50 left (one quick cradle)

One hand catch and cradle – 50 right, then 50 left (one quick cradle)

Face dodge- catch-face dodge-throw- 50 right, then 50 left

Split dodge- throw right, catch right, split dodge to left hand, throw left, catch left, split back to right hand- 50 right, then 50 left

Cross handed- 50 right, then 50 left- “cross handed” means stick in right hand on the left side of body, or stick in left hand on right side of body (one quick cradle each time)

Behind the back- 50 right, then 50 left

25 each hand bounce (stand further back from the wall, throw the ball to the wall, and let it bounce back to you)

if you drop any pass start all over

wallball is used to simulate game like situations and help you to better yourself, so throwing lazy passes and just messing around isn't going to make you any better

Very nice post. I'll add some I do.

- Around the world: (pick a spot on the wall. Throw overhand, then 45degree, then sidearm, then 45degree (below sidearm), then underhand. Once you're done that, repeat with the other hand. If you ever miss the target, you restart.)

-Reaction time training: (start a certain distance away and throw ball at a target on the wall. Every time you catch it you take a step closer and repeat. The harder you throw the ball the harder it becomes.

I made these two up. I also do a lot of sidearm bounce shots at a target.

EDIT: I've also been working on quick stick where you switch hands on the throw instead of the catch. i.e throw left, catch, switch, throw right, catch, switch, etc. all in a smooth movement.

Practice like you would play in a game (I'm assuming you try you're hardest in games). Catch and throw the way you know you should in a game situation.

Here's a thread with a few wall ball routines for you:

As said above, you should practice like you would play in a game. So pick a spot on the wall and try and hit that spot every time you throw. It will help with your accuracy and repetition. So just keep at it. And yes wall ball is a great way to break in a new pocket in your stick.
And in the link cali feeder showed my and many other good wall ball routines are in there so I would check it out.

That's a pretty close thread...I searched wall ball as two words so I'm not sure it came up...anyway makimaki had a pretty good post.

Anyway this thread (and perhaps that other one) is for like beginners to have a firm drill to practice with, and to get rid of the "what should I do" threads.

I do 200 left (not in a row but if i miss every other catch i will start back like 20 catches) 200 right w/ same criteria. both of those are no cradling. then i do throw w/ right and catch with left and so on. i do 100 total.

thats what i basically do everyday.

When it comes to wall ball I used to try and reach a certain number of catches left and right handed without missing. Drop one and its a restart, and continue until I get it. But usually I just switched to the other hand and vice versa. I used to spend hours and hours when I was younger just working on this, and it pays off to be comfortable doing anything with both hands. Now I usually just get some practice, get used to my stick's throwing style, and use my brick chimney to either pound in a pocket, or practice catching bad passes (its uneven and the ball can richochet anywhere).
