Pink gator-skin super macdaddies, they will elevate your defensive game ten-fold......(10)
But honestly, it doesn't really matter like laxmiddie11 said, its all preference

Well higher end gloves break in the best or they are already are broken in but if your beginner you dont need that stuff yet. I recommened the brine beginner stuff if your at that level always satisfied me during early years.

Well, if a sense their are gloves better (more flexible, lighter, ect) for defense. Cause on d all you need is the quickness to move your wrists and to be comfy, as you barely ever get touched in the hand.

I'd suggest exodus2s, HRW series, or the new gaits. None of which have cuffs, so your wrists aren't restricted at all, and all are very comfortable. Also flights are heralded as a super tight super light super comfy glove, never tried em though.

I suggest Flight gloves. They are very light and very flexible. Perfect defenseman gloves.

Flights would be perfect for d, Exodus II would also be great if you want to dish out another 40 bucks

the only thing i would put in as a requirement for D is no wrist guards, you need to have the extra flex and you don't need the protection.

Suggestions
Gforce
flights
studs

i like gloves with some protection (like my sick mac daddies) becuase if you body check someone and you hit their stick or you get hit in the hand by the stick from a shot it tends to hurt. but just a little. it actually tickles.
