Well, last year my team was 7th and 6h so there were quite a few noobs. First week of practice none of them could throw catch oor cradle. It was so agravating to watch them try and scoop after mising the catvh. Anyone know what im talking about.

we all had to start somewhere... everytime i start to act like too much of a jerk to the freshies on my team, my mom reminds me that i scored on myself 4 times my freshman year... the only thing that you can do is be nice to them and teach them everything that you know and help them get better

Don't get frusturated, they can sense it. If you're angry that they can't get it right, they'll stray from the fundamentals and just do anything to get it. For instance, GB's, they'll start raking it. Just help them out and be a leader.

yeh it sucks but what are you gunna do if you act like a d ick to them they ill quit and you will have no team at all
Seriously, I sucked severely when I started. I don't like reffing the children, but I get paid for it and I'll do it. It's important to get started somewhere. I don't understand why people hate it when kids suck at a sport THEY HAVE JUST STARTED. What do you expect?

Look at me. I'm awesome, but I still can't cradle, pass, or catch. I'm just THAT awesome.
That's right. We're against the whole mentality of "You suck and we hate you." So quit hating and start the love. We all love Faceitoff, so start off with that. Yeesh. Did you suck as a noob? Or did you just start out amazing? That's what I thought.

there's two ways a team can be good. First is if they have solid fundamentals...catching, passing, etc. The other way is if they play together like a team...from knowing each other and being friends. The best teams combine the two.
The way I see it is that you've got two options. One is to sit back and blame them for all the team's troubles, be a ball hog, and try and salvage what games you can this season. The other is to stay after practice, help out the new kids, etc. Don't you think they know that they aren't as good as they could be? Every lacrosse player looks to improve. Step up and be a leader on the team, and then you'll be improving team morale, skill, and togetherness (all important in a winning program) all at the same time.
No one really took time off to help me with my game until I started playing club in college. That spurred me on to start coaching, and give the kids where I was that big advantage.

Yes, Laxman. Tell me that you love me. C'mon. Do it. Just do it. Do it. Tell me that you love me even though I suck. Tell me that you wish to play lacrosse with me even though I'm a "n00b0rz."

Being stupid and sarcastic and also spelling the word "newbie" with zero's will get you nowhere and nothing except the label of "Tool".
so quick to bring about the label of newbie...quit acting like one.

Kob. I already know that I am a tool. And a noob. And any other names lurking in your head that you would like to throw at me. Everyone, but you apparently, knows that I am a very sarcastic man. I was just telling him to chill on the beginner-hating in MY OWN WAY.

This is my first year of playing organized lax. It really sucks when the coaches split up the vets and the noobs and each do there own drills. I get stuck with the noobs. It really blows when we have to do passing line drills and the kids chuck the ball 20 feet above my head or off to the side and I have to go chase it into the bushes.

The times that we split apart the novices and the more experienced in drills is so that the coaches can work more with the new guys. That really sucks.
Your ways are a mystery to me faceitoff....

Ya, I understand that. The only times that I feel I'm getting anything out of it though, is when we go over different breaks and those types of moves. The constant cradling, scooping, and simple stationary passing drills is what really gets to me, because I'm already very proficient with that stuff.

what i really hate, is when you have a kid who's been playing for 5 years, thinks he's amazing because he can hold the ball an inch form his chest adn not get called for pinning. we have a kid like this he rund sthe ball around the restrainng box, goes iso, gets raped, then says we werent giving him an outlet, but when he's tripple teamed, that means that on any decent hs team, 2 people will be open. also the 55 mph over hand non bounce shot from 10 yards soesn't help his status with the team

i also hate when someone thinks they're a really good shooter when my off hand shot is faster than their strong hand.

Well, accuracy is more important than speed.

laxdevil666, don't double post. Just edit your message next time bro. It helps save bandwith costs for Mark.
But yeah, I hate the kids who think there sooooo good. Theres a kid on my team who was the leading scorer during the summer leauge. We had a mini scrimage during wednesday's practice. I poke checked him so hard he fell flat on his arse...It didn't shut him up though.

Yeah, last spring was my first season playing lacrosse because around here they dont have youth programs, just high school lacrosse. i started playing as a freshman and when i first started playing, i sucked. i couldnt catch worth anything, although i could cradle pretty well but that doesnt help if you cant get the ball. i was pleased how the older teammates were very supportive, even when i would launch a pass way over their head.
even with it being my first year i still managed to make second line jv i i think thats pretty good considering i was 1 of 2 freshman defenders and there were 4 full lines of sophmores, juniors, and seniors. i should be starting jv this year as a sophmore. not to shabby if i say so myself.
I didn't get good for three years. I got some motivation. I won't say what from. But I got some, and I learned how to compete, thanks to 9th grade cross-country, the only sport I've been naturally proficient at. But I hate X-C running. We just had state yesterday, and I got to sit in my house while it was 50 and pouring. I love not doing a fall sport. Ironically, one of my favorite races was when it was about 30 and snowing and I ran a 20:21 5k, which isn't very good for me. But I loved that race.
Anyway, I'll be starting varsity, and if I hadn't broken my hand, I'd be a lot higher up in skill. I've been progressing very quickly. I couldn't cradle at all until I got an offset head in seventh grade. I don't care what they say about the STX Spirit, it's not good for beginners. Give them an offset head, or at least one you can make a decent pocket out of. That should be used for kids who want to work on ball control, like using extra weight in a stick. That's what I have to say. But now I have a mind for the game. I really don't pick up sports fast, except skiing and running, and now I snowboard. Hmmm. Don't hate on noobs.

the only sport i picked up on fast was surfing (first try i stood up). lax took me like 2-3 years too.

i was probably the worst noob ever. it took me 4 months to learn how to catch...and then i was still catching wrong. i had a horrible coach where some players on the team knew the game better than he did. then the next year i went to a lot of camps and worked my butt off to be a better player. And by then i ironically knew more than my coach...the next year my new coach was this idiot who concentrates only on running and being in shape (i've had many of those)...and my coach after that only cared how good my weak hand was. the only way i really learned how to play was from travel teams and camps. So if you're starting out lax on a school team, expect to suck until you find other help. Your lax coach aint a lax coach first...hes a woodshop teacher...hes a history teacher...hes a gym teacher.

lax is the only sport i picked up fast. I started playing last spring and so far i've played 3 seasons (2 summer leagues) and been to two camps. what really helped me though was that may coach told me to just practice throwing and catching right and more left. (im right handed) So on the third day i started playing i started throwing on a wall lefty. I was third string all freshman year and played about 10minutes all season.
But when i started actually learning plays etc. (which i sucked at) i could throw and shoot really well. the only reason i think i picked it up so fast was because i could throw both sides. It sucked being a noob cause i never got to play and the sophomores always skiped passed me- when i played

im not going to brag..but my parents have told me "Everytihng i like and try hard in, I get really good in it" so after my first season i was actually pretty good. Its just that other kids just think of it as another sport and Blah BLah they will get better over time..im the kind of person who helps out the "NEW KIDS". But sometimes they can get annoying but helping kids out means they will tell there friends how fun it is and pretty soon LAX will be huge.

i dont know what any of you are talking about. i've been the best lacrosse player in the world since the first day i picked up a stick. just kidding. but seriously, i feel your pain. there are a ton of newbs on my fall ball team, and in a place like georgia, its really hard to get better when almost none of the coaches know crap about the game. but definetly dont discourage them. hold your frustration in and lead by example.

This has to be one of the ultimate bringbacks.
But to make this post worthwhile, I'll say something important. Don't beginners. How is lacrosse going to grow if we don't encourage people to join?

All you have to do is keep encouraging(sp?) them. I helped coach this year, and alot of begginers will not pick up on what there doing wrong. Give some pointers on what they should try to improve on. Also, you should have a look at there sticks. I know that most newbies leave there sticks the way they bought them. I had to restring a good 5 sticks on my regular team this year alone, let aside the team I coached. Help them if you what them to get better and frustrate(sp?) you less. I started at the same time as our league, so I had to learne alot on my own. We all start somewere. You think your so great, help them out, then. You'll gain respect by alot of people that way.

Yeah If people would stop complaining about how bad they are and just help them figure out the basics it wouldnt be as frustrating. There was this kid i convinced to join and ever since he joined, i've been workin with him and he's pretty decent now.
