They make a decent living. My coach has a nice car, nice house, and a nice TV. I'd say they're making $50-80,000. It also depends on the school they're at and how long they've been there.

This gives you some kind of indication. My guess is that the least-paid DI head coach makes at least $65,000, and the best (I'm thinking Syracuse) makes around $250,000, but that's only a slightly educated guess.

Also many coaches have incentives built into their salary. So if they make post-season tournaments or the ncaa tournament they make more. Sometimes they get more for winning season and things like that.

it all depends on the prestige of the lacrosse program and the amount of funds the school's athletic program has. in the end, its a full time job, so it pays enough for the coach to be able to live a comfortable life

well looking at the article, for a top school it would be maybe 125k, which is a decent amount. Also, dont forget that when you go to say, Navy camp, UVA camp, Hopkins camp, etc, basically all of the money goes to the coach (after lodgings, food, assistants are paid) which is tens of thousands of bucks too.

That is an erroneous statement.the money goes to the school who disseminates it with their own discretion.

after 24 years at Villanova, Randy Marks was making $14,000 a year. he retired last season after the university refused to give him full health insurance. i cant imagine thats typical, but it does show how great the spread is.

coaches get a coaching salary, but most also have little crappy jobs where they make extra cash like IM Assistant, Facilities Coordinator, etc etc. Coaches also make a good sum on money on summer camps, lots of coaches will pull 25k+ on one camp.

Im currently interviewing for a collegiate coaching job at a D1 school as an assistant (not going to say where), and I can tell you the head coach is making enough in the year to support himself very comfortably. If I were to land the assistant coaching job, I'll be getting more than 10k + free grad school, and that's as an assistant

Paying coaches real money is like recruiting -- way more teams are doing it now than were 10 years ago.
Spenny, you're right, I don't think Villanova's situation is typical and their program has been notoriously underfunded. That may actually have been a situation where his being there so long actually drove down the market price because the Villanova's athletic department may not have realized how much coaches in a high-profile program like theirs were going for/took advantage of the loyalty of a long-time coach.

None of you will actually beleive me but i have it on pretty good authority that Gary gait is on over $300,000 at 'Cuse WLax with a clause to stipulate that if he does well with the WLax team he will be given the MLax job in time.

I can believe that, but that's a very different situation than Joe Lacrosse, no matter who he is or how long he's been there, making 300k. Gary Gait is arguably the most iconic lacrosse player of all time and he can do huge things for a lacrosse program. I have no idea how much longer Desko plans on sticking around, but I imagine 'Cuse wanted to secure GG for the men's team, so what they're doing here is getting him back on campus, giving a huge boost to their womens program and getting him ready for when Desko does step down.
