Please post the following info:

Your state or area.
Whether you use 3-man for none, some, or all regular-season HS games.
Whether you use 3-man for none, some, or all HS playoff games.

(I didn't want to post this as a poll because it's important to make sure we aren't getting a bunch of responses from the same state.)

Minnesota:

Club--2-man for regular season; 3-man for all playoff games
State league--3-man for regular season whenever possible, otherwise 2-man; 3-man for all playoff games.

No three-man games, ever
State Final(s): Two on field and a CBO. Works very well.

MASS:
3-man games in playoffs. State Final(s): 3 on field plus CBO

CA: 1 or 2 man mechanic for HS games in the Central Coast. I believe that it's the same for the LA area, but let's let Play-On confirm that.

Three man mechanic for most play-off games.

Most regular season varsity games are 2-man. Some are 3-man, especially for tournaments or highly competitive games.

Play-offs are either 2-man or 3-man (quarterfinals are 3 man).

State semifinals and finals are 3-man and CBO.

CBO = Chief Bench Official.

Interestingly, the NCAA eliminated the position years ago, but the NFHS still has it and it sounds like it gets used occasionally in playoffs.

The CBO essentially calls sub infractions, offside, and bench fouls (and probably some illegal procedure stuff), and the CBO grants timeouts and is probably the one to deal with 7-13 challenges and coach-requested equipment checks.

This will need to be addressed in the new mechanics manual.

Regular: 2-man mostly [3-man if requested for highly competitive games and there's enough officials]... rare instances there'll only be 1

State Semi's and Finals - 3-man and a CBO

Regular: Mostly 2-man crews (3-man crews are for games that are highly competitive and for teams that request them) This is for Upstate, I'm not sure about Downstate. I think it's the same, but I'll let Woodenstick confirm this.

Sectional Playoffs: All 3 man crews

State Playoffs: All games are 4 man crews (Referee, Umpire, Field Judge and CBO)

Varies by area and availability of refs.

In most established lacrosse areas, 3-man for varsity. Some schools request 2-man due to financial reasons.

EPSLA playoffs - all 3-man

Mostly 2 man for JV Varsity - Middle School sometimes single ref. Varsity gets 3 if coaches want it and we have enough guys.
Playoffs - Mostly all 3 man.

We play NCAA rules so in the state finals we do not have a CBO but have a box official/alternate.

most games are 2 man crews for the regular season with the exception of some of the "bigger" games (regular season games at Invesco for example) when 3 man crews are used.....

playoffs are 2 man for the first round games and then 3 man the rest of the way...we'll also put an official (not in full uniform) at the table and in the press box, both in a supervisory capacity....

2-man - Regular Season and Playoffs
3-man - Championship Game, All-Star Game

Moving from NCAA rules to NHFS Rules in 2008. Could be a "recognized" sport by the Illinois High School Association" in 2009, so coaches thought it best to make the transition this year.

3 man for all jv/varsity including playoff. Should be the same for club level in High School. Two man otherwise.

It was my understanding that 3 man was the rule for all of Ohio, varsity and jv, per the Ohio High School Lacrosse Association, though I'm not finding anything on number of officials on the OHSLA website. This is what was explained at our area officials meetings.

This survey is also telling me that we are spread thin around the country since most of us are stating that we have 2 man for varsity and JV regular season HS games. Ideally these games should have 3 man coverage. What also happens here is college games always have 3 man coverage, which on a busy day means that varsity/jv games have 2 man coverage with those games doubled up, and MS or freshman games have 2 man if they are lucky.

Well, some of it depends on whether the schools are willing to pay for 3 men. Here, they are, but we probably only get about 5-10% of the games with 3 men because we don't have enough guys.

BTW, B-division MCLA games can use 2 men. A-division is supposed have 3 on all games.

I think many of the posted answers only addressed varsity, and you can't assume that JV has the same coverage. In my NY section, for example, we mostly have 2 man varsity during the regular season, but I probably solo at least 50% of my JV games, and a lot of our middle school games have no referee at all. I am stunned that some places use 3 man for JV. I would think that is a little costly, plus where do you get the referees to do this? Maybe Ohio should ship some referees to NY, we could use them. :-)

Actually Ohio referees come up to Michigan to help with tournaments...maybe they need to start advertising their out of state services

The way lacrosse is growing in Ohio we are quite shorthanded.

The way the boys are growing 3 man was insisted upon for the sake of safety.

Have to believe it is the same in many areas. The game moves very fast and there is just so much one can see. Safety issues of course as well.
