When You have a guy with the ball either on a fast break or getting a pass when hes open like right on the crease. Pretty much when theres no defense around, Is it better to stay in the net and just try to make your best stop or should is it better to go out and attack them and try for a check them?

Thanks

Whatever works best for you. If the man is on the crease waiting for a pass then I immediately attack him with my body to his body and my stick on his stick, he usually doesn't expect it and I stuff him there. If it's a guy running down with the ball with no defense he'll probably shoot from restraining line-ish so I wait til he shoots and just do the best I can with the save.

Just do your best. More than likely this shouldn't happen, but if it does, there is no way you will be blamed for letting one in on a breakaway. Thats the defense's fault for letting that happen. If he comes close try to surprise him by making yourself look as big as possible and go right up and challenge him to shoot at you. If hes on the crease, go right up to him while the balls in the air and blast him.

Watch his stick, not his eyes. Come out, with your hands away from you. Stay as square to him as possible.

Lay him out and hopefully he won't get the shot off, but even if he does, putting him on the ground should humble him a little and make the other team think twice about getting too close.

but if your small like me at 4ft 10in i cant hit anyone and dnock them over on a fast break i stay in the goal and make them shoot where i want them to by either bending my knees more and makng them shoot high or stay as tall as i am and make them shoot low or around me but if they are on the crease i would try to hit him like anyone else if anything you can slow them down and your d can pick him up or you can knock out the ball and stop there chance for a little while but thts just me do what you want to do

yeah same here, if its just a guy camping on the crease ill get physical and match sticks, but if its a break away chances are he'll take a long wind up to try and show off and you can make a good save.

It happens alot. Especially in indoor. And ive been experimenting a little and have had a little bit of success with both

Yes, indoor has helped me improve on one on one's and close shots SO much. We're currently 3-0 but we'll probably lose to Collegiate :(

1 on 1's are tough, mostly becuase the odds of the shooter scoring are greater than you saving the shot. Here are some helpful hints. Always, always, always concentrate on the ball. The shooter will throw fakes with his stick and body to make you bite. Stay still, don't bounce. you need to be ready to explode to the ball especially on the fast breaks and 1 on 1's. Match your top hand with the shooter's top hand, that way your stick lines up with the shooters stick and you have a better chance of making the save. Last, don't be afraid to hit someone. I can't tell you when it is right to hit someone becuase it is a feel thing, you know when you should leave crease and when you shouldn't so just follow your gut. The most important thing to remember is to not get down if they shooter scores becuase that might prevent you from making futures saves. hope that helps.

Shadow his stick with youre stick if hes on the crease.
Also you might wanna get physical with him if thats what you like to do.

from a shooter's perspective, it's always tough when the goalie comes out a little bit to cut off the angle, and doesn't bite on fakes. staying big, and not giving the shooter a lot of options is probably the best course of action.

you don't want to be flying out of the goal waving your stick in the air, or trying to take body... this will just allow the shooter to shoot around you.

take up space in the goal, and make the shooter beat you

Some coaches say, stay flat on the goal. I personally like to come out and put my whole body/stick in front of the shot.

I first watch the ball if he is about 5-4 yards from the crease, when he starts coming closer, I then do Stick on Stick. It works most of the time, but don't worry about it if he scores, it usually was a defensive mistake.

That would be Matt Russell, the one and only. I can remember that hit clearly, and being a small guy myself, I find a TON of inspiration from him. In language arts we had to do something about a hero of ours, and yeah, I chose Matt Russell. Haha, I remember after the hit the spectator going, "All 5 foot 7 and 160 pounds of him."

Anyways, about the thread. If there isn't any defense near the creaseman and he's getting a feed, I usually come out and go for the pass. If that just isn't gonna happen, I'll meet him right where he is and either unsucessfully try to lay him out or go stick to stick.

I have a couple of different options for when I sense a 1 on 1 opportunity come up.

There is a pass on the crease.
1. I try to pick off the pass, and if I do, look for quick outlet.
2. I leave the goal and lay out the man on the crease.
3. I stay in position and stay big, try to make the guy shoot stick side high.

If the man drives through the defense and then creates a 1 on 1, I stay in goal, and try to mirror his stick, and go from there. Hopefully if I mirror his stick well enough, he will have to throw some fakes, which should give time for a defenseman to lay him out.

well, by then your screwed. I try to go out and attack them. MATCH YOUR STICK WITH THEIRS!!! and CHECK THEM AS HARD AS YOU CAN. if it looks like hes shooting high, then match your stick with his and jump in the air. hopefully your body will block the shot if your stick misses.

FitzGoalie

i've found that it's easier/more effective (for me personally) to bait with your stick and not with your body. to do this, draw your stick in close to your body and lower the head so it's around your chest. if an attackman sees you positioned like this, he will almost always shoot for the largest portion of empty net, which will be high. Just watch his hands, don't bite on a fake, and explode to the ball on the actual shot, trying to engulf his whole stick head in your pocket. exploding and leading with your hands is key, because even if you do bite on a fake, you might be able to dislodge the ball from his stick, scoop up the loose ball and start a fast break in the opposite direction.

i just get low and make em shoot high, if your fast enough just pick off the pass and shoot up the field and get the ball to your middies.. But if neither of those are an option, our friend matt russell shows us a nice way to get it done

BoiledEggs

Ok alot of these answers arent that good

1. You can bait, either stand up tall so he shoots low. Or crouch down low so he shoots high. You could shade to the leftor right but i wouldnt recommend that

2. Be still, DONT SHADE HIS STICK. If he starts throwing a bunch of fakes and your shading his stick your done. But if hes doing fakes and your still and patient you will know when hes about to shoot, then you go for the save.

3. You could also step out to the top of the crease to cut down on the angle.

laxgoalie66
12-05-2007, 01:21 PM
Because yours were so much better.

Shading his stick is what I do when theres an open man on the crease and he is about to get the pass and quick stick it in. If its a man on the crease tryin to fake you out, of course you don't go stick on stick.

As an attackmen, I always hate it when the goalie stays within the crease; not in the goal where he usually is, but within the crease. I knew that if he was coming out, to break on the ball, and have an easy dunk. I mean, if you will clearly get to the attack before the ball, by all means, punish him. But if you come out and don't have the clean hit/check you are out of position already and it's hard to get back to the center of the net. Like I said, I hate it when goalies come to the line of the crease, stay in the cage, stay big and MAKE you score. There's nothing more disturbing than thinking/knowing you are going to get the easy one and choke on your own stick because the goalie had clean, sound fundamentals, and you were to lame to stick it in the net.

Otherwise, yell at that d-man who was looking in the stands.

when a guy is right on the crease, you are supposed to stand there, get as big as you can, and dont go with his fakes because he will flip out and he wont know what to do. thats what i do

The best 1 v 0 goalies are gunfighters. No twitching or excess movement, no guessing....it's a quick judgement. You're either staying home, getting big and matching stick or you release the hounds and bury the filthy little attackman. Young goalies should stay with the former as it takes some experience to know when to go for the latter.

Yes, indoor has helped me improve on one on one's and close shots SO much. We're currently 3-0 but we'll probably lose to Collegiate :(

are u doing the swift creek indoor thing?i remember last year...i slashed a collegiate guy in the face during the scsc winter indoor league. we almost beat them last year during spring...we lost by 1.

to get back on topic, wut would u guys do during a braveheart?

1 MAJOR THING: i got a 4 game suspention since u gotta watch the timeing of your hit, he was just comeing in off the 24 foot and i rushed out at him and cranked him, only problem being he wasent ready or some stupid ****, just watch your timeing. Secondly, if its a clear break line up with his stick, i've trained myself to be able to come out to the very tip of my crease and look big and jump back as their looking for the over shoulder shot, they'll usually throw a few fakes and cut across the crease after, just stay square with big shoulders and you'll have no problem.

Unless you have some experience on baiting or have a better feel for the game don't come out and make those desicions just stay big in the net and react after the shot either making a great save(stuff) or making him shoot and misss it's hard to saave 1 on 1's but stay in the net and play big and you'll get a better shot.

95% of 1 on 1 shots go in. Just look at most MLL games, there's either a crazy save or a goal.

What I personally tend to do is come out the cage, and lay one on the shooter (either right before he has the ball, or when he's about to shoot). But then again, I'm 6,2 and weigh in at almost 100kg...

Take a look at this takedown:
