Middie is outside the box and the 10 count is on. Loose ball, defender pushes and play-on. Middie or his teammate recovers the ball and play on ends.

Does the count continue unabated?

Is there a new count because there was sort of a missed whistle?

If there is no new count, should the offense ensure that the defense gets the ball so there will be a whistle?

Is that a new count?

Take 5 months off and lose your rulebook, and the oddities of this avocation start to keep one up at night.......

Yes, if there's a loose ball and a play-on, then the original team regains possession, there's a new count. The easiest way to remember this is to use your counting arm to do the play-on.
