it is mostly hard work and dedication that makes a goalie. but wat kind of people are goalies? are they the quiet kids? are they the popular ones? maybe the kid that you can always count on and you know will have your back?

its a unique position, there is only one on the field at a time. and usually a school has one or two on varsity. for a school of 2000 like mine, its me and my friend. thats a lot of kids for only two to come out of. so only a select few can/will do it.

so wat kind of people are goalies?

Far too often its the kid who steps forward when the space needs to be filled regardless of whether they want to play goal or not.
People who see when a job needs doing and take the responsibility to do it with little regard to their own health.
These people are few and far between.

Even fewer are the kids who walk onto a pitch and can't think of anything more awesome than padding up and guarding the pipes. The Matt Russel's of the world.

exactly how i feel. when i first tried to keep for my team cause my coach asked us all who wanted to be back up i raised my hand and he was like, no i want you on the field. so i went home and started practicing it on my own until i was good enough to show my coach that i could do it. and i dont know how many people have told me that i am insane for wanting to be keep. i always say its just fun. and isnt it just that, fun.

Now to answer the question at hand most of the cats I know that play goalie are usually either one of the more reserved mature guys or, they are the class clowns so to speak some are both. to be honest most that I have met are pretty big clowns. But that is just my experience.

I'm not a goalie, but i've met a ton.

Goalies seem to be different then those who play the field with some exceptions. Like stated before they get thrown in goal on whims most of the time, it takes character to stay in goal. Its either one extreme or another. They are either the biggest jokesters on the team, or the ones who are no nonsense, but great guys.

goalies are... the special ones haha

i love playing goalie, I wouldn't trade it for anything else, and if you ask any of my teammates, im definately the loudest, biggest jokester on the team because I believe it takes a certain "mental fortitude" to be able to stand in front of that little rubber ball flying at you upwards of 90 mph.
You have to be dedicated to become a good goalie, and I do not believe that it is just the "chubby, slow kid" You have to have the fastest hand-eye coordination and quick relfex if you want to have even a chance to survive in the goal in the higher level games.

I'm loud and a jokester, I make fun of my coaches, call them dumb and fat to their faces, but when it comes to game time, people say my WHOLE personality changes. I become even LOUDER but I'm no longer a jokester. I get serious. I can take hits... and lots of them. I love being goalie, and I get to show off my battle wounds.

i just started playin lacrosse this year and i was put at goalie becuz the one the team had was big, slow and all around sucked at the lacrosse.

i've only been playing goalie for a little over a month and i think that goalie is the person who is mentally strong. they try 2 keep a positive mind even when they get scored on so it won't happen again.

They are the leaders of the defense. The long poles depend on goalies to let them know where the ball is at all times.

A goalie is someone who will put time and dedication into his job. They should take pride in what they do. Goalie really isn't a position anyone can do. it takes a lot of hard work and practice to be good.

Goalies should b the one on a team that everyone should like. As a goalie u need a good connection with ur teammates. if u don't then they won't really put much effort into making ur job any easier on game days.

For me, I was never the moth athletic on the field. I was just a natural goalie. I think if someone has the passion to be a goalie and puts effort into it, they can become great no matter what personality or body shape.

While running, I was part of the middle group when running. When we did sprints, many people beat me in it. But, I practiced harder than any of them. I put more time and effort in getting my stick skills and my footwork up. And it has gotten me to the top of my team.

If someone is not ready to put time and effort into being a goalie, he/she will not succeed.

definetely were not the sharpest tools in the shed.....i think the last point in tht thread about the youth league proves tht......your parents most have gone crazy when they heard that their son volunteered to play goalie....

i just got into it in like 7th grade....i played attack and really liked scoring but i found it intriguing when the goalie would make a save and everyone would cheer....maybe i was bicurious and wanted to try the other side but i got addicted to it and its done well for me. i quickly learned there was a lot more to goalie then just being dumb. unlike other positinos where we have to just know plays and sets, we also have to think with both sides of our brain at the same time. you have to think about the current moment where the opposing offense has the ball and where the attack or mid will shoot and youll also have to think about how youll clear it when you make the save or how you must adjust to make the anticipated save easier for you or somthing like that. id be lying if i said i remember anything from class during practice or a game....i swear i actualy take the time during the season to actually study my notes because i 100% dont remember after a game(i pick them up again quickly but normally i never even do my extra work or hw because my teachers never collect or check....but i still get a's). so many scenarios play through my head that i guess i lose memory space like a computer and delete what isnt relevent at the moment to make space for the random scenarios and anticipated events that i think up.

i guess you can say goalies are strange but i also say that we are a special group. really a lot of people would never want to do what we do.

oh, and of course the outrageously good looking comment applies...how do you think the women would be attracted to us during the season if we werent good looking.....they have to look beyond the welts and contusions on your body so being good looking just gives them an easier time....

I know I am repeating a previous post of mine, but I thought it's worth... Last yr. at our 1st indoor game for the winter, my brother's PAL coach asked any other teamate if they would step into the goal now and then, to let my brother out of the cage sometimes, just to learn the field and the other positions. You guessed it, TOTAL DEAD SILENCE from everybody, including parents. 1 parent went as far to tell the coach later, "Don't ever ask me or my son, to play goalie ever" My little brother just looked at all of them, on that day, my little brother STOOD AS A MAN in front of children!!

I started playing lacrosse as a middie. Then when i switched clubs my team didn't have a goalie anymore. So my coach decided to put everyone in goal and throw tennis balls at us and when i didn't flinch and even got down on a worm burner I was named the goalie. I have been playing goalie for three years now and have a chance to become the starting goalie on my High School Varsity team as a freshman.
----------
But i have realized that the goalie is the one guy on the field that the whole team depends on. And i take a lot of heat from my teammates about being the goalie and being different because a get balls fired at me. But i know that none of them will ever have the balls enough to step in front of an 80 mph shot. Plus they all realize how important you are to the team and how gutsy you are when you make the game winning save, record a shut out, or make a save after they messed up on defense.
------------
Us Goalies are CRAZY people that love the adrenaline rushes and might have a genetic disorder(but if thats the case many of us all have the same disorder!)

I only started play lacrosse as my mums league team needed a goalie, they didn't want me to play at first as I'd be up against some of the best Australia had to offer (a few of them played in 05 world cup...), but then they had no option as no one else stepped up. So I guess you can say I choose to be goalie, and looking back I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm probably one of the more quieter people out there, put I always have my teams back, and I'm also a little crazy....after all, I willingly get infront of a ball shot at 100+ km/h (and stop it!!!).

I believe goalies are the ones who are the more settled easy minded people there also there the more mature players of the team. i like to consider us keeps as a hybrid, i believe we are all a mix of something being the joker, mature type, lazy, easy going, and just being normal, and maybe there might be the one *** whole goalie( i've never met one) but we are who we are and we are thing save goals and kicking ***...

laxgoalie66

All I know is, we have strong mentality.

We can deal with being the leaders of the team, and when you win you get praised but when you lose you have to deal with a lot of credit to the loss, even it wasn't all your fault(Lack of Defense, Offense not scoring, etc) but most people are quick to think it was all the goalie's fault.

thats exactly how i am... you absolutely nailed it. I don't play goalie at the moment.

during the summer our goalie was missing for a game or two and the real goalie and the coach both said i was better that him. It amazes me how much down that goalie was.

and the fact that it puts a ton of pressure on me as a part time goalie. Now i play indoor for winter league and we don't have a goalie at all. I'm playing with sophomores. (I'm a freshman. moved up b/c so few kids) then some other frosh moved up to even out teams. The first game comes around and we have no goalie. I obviously volunteer b/c my friends/teammates basically beg me to and it puts tons of pressure on me. I do enjoy playing goalie every so often.

For our high schools team i know that there won't be a freshman goalie and i'm pretty sure there will not be a JV goalie. I'm in a dilemma rather i should play goalie or Middie which i've been playing since 3rd grade basically.

So i don't know which position i want to play.

Glad i got it out.

I dont think your part about have the fastest hand-eye coordination and the quickst reflexes is necessarily true. I play goalie for my team and my friends say im pretty good at it, and yet i cant play any hand-eye cordination game to save my life. For example im terrible at baseball, football and tenis. I also have some what of a processing delay, but people say they cant tell that when im on the field just when they ask me questions it takes me a little longer then other people to answer. Also with my experience i think that the people that actually stand up and play goalie on their own are either quite or they are the jokester, personally i am the quite one and i do not like talking to people that i dont know.

im a keeper, and im loud abnoxious and a joker... But when i needa be, im composed and patient and a leader. It takes a really diverse person to play cage, someone who adjusts to different situations. They needa be angry and hard on their team when they need it, and kind and understanding aswell (but a lot less, lol). We really are our own breed, and as long as you have determination and persevierence, we will go far. We are the sort of people that excel in everyhting we do. Always put in 120% and are the last to leave the field at training... We have no choice, we have to be the most commited player. Everyone counts on us. Even if they dont show you, they appreciate you being in the cage. Which is usually why you get along with your team so well, because in one way or another, everyone looks up to you...

We are the GODs of the field!!!!

As a goalie I'm the goofiest, relaxed, chill, funny guy off the field ortaking waterbreaks during practice. But once I jump in cage I am the most serious player on the field. We have to be, because we need the most mental stamina and control to get through the game. It takes something special to be a goalie, first you have to have b***s, to be able stand in cage and take 90 mph shots is not something any person can willingly do....and enjoy. Second you have to ahve dedication. You have to work harder than anyone else on the field because you are one of a kind, and the only one of you on the field. Goalies also have to be leaders. I don't know if we are drawn tot he position because of the leadership it brings, but the majority of goalies I know are leaders on and off the field. Playing goalie takes something special....

Goalies are the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.

I switched to goalie from defense in junior high because our goalie was terrible and I told him he sucked. He basically told me to "f' off" and put up or shut up. So we switched positions the next day in practice and after my first one-on-one save, I told him I was taking his position and good luck trying to stop me.

He switched to attack and I became a goalie and never looked back.

A great goalie is the one who looks around when everything breaks down, smiles and says to his/her teammates, "Don't worry, I got it covered." You gotta want the pressure of being the last thing between the other team and the goal.

My son is a completely different person in and out of equipment. Calm and Intelligent out of it, and Angry and Indifferent in it. Not saying that he's not intelligent in his equipment, he just seems to close one door and open another when the whistle blows. He's not the same kid. He's still thinking (probably more than when he's out of it) but his facial expressions, demeanor, voice, body language etc. change when it's time to play.

I don't know that there is any specific personality that plays the position, but , I believe that they all exhibit the same personality when the game is on the line.

Goalies are people who have balls.
People who aren't afraid of getting in front of a shot going over 90mph.

They're the leaders, they hold everyone down.
And they kind of have to, you have to be strong physically and mentally, to let your team know that the last shot you missed isn't going to determine the game.

They're loud, you need to direct your defense.
They're dedicated and loyal to their team.

But most of all, they're the best players in the game. :]

Goalies are the crazy ones. The ones who wake up in the morning and just decide to throw instinct out the window and jump in front of everything that comes there way. They're loud, confident, and determined. They have absolutely no tolerance for losing. They don't even know what pain is. They're deadly quick. They're willing to put it all on the line to win the game. While you're thinking about the goal that just went in, they're already forgotten all about it and they've moved on. They're the folks that when they get scored on, don't have time for shame, they just look you in the eye and dare you to try and score again. They're leaders. They're talkers. They're the glue that holds things together when it starts to get crazy. They're the people who at the end of the game, walk of the field proud of themselves for playing the best game on the field...for putting up a shut out game, or having 24 saves...and at the same time hoisting the games "MVP" in the air for his one goal of the game which happened to come in double OT and "win the game for the team" Overall, lax goalies are like nobody else in the world...and nobody can touch us.

right on the dot. when people ask me why or how i got into being goalie, i don't even remember. i remember the feeling of being in the goal. and i love it. everyday, i can't wait to get back on the field.

people don't realize that goalies sacrifice their bodies. it's more than catching the ball. it's the thrill. the thrill of facing a shot at high speeds, and then the satisfaction of stopping it.

At the lower level, goalies are the fat kids who cant run and play video games all day. They are the kids who is so bad at attack/middie/defense, the team puts them in the net. Eventually, those kids quit.
In higher levels, goalie as the amazing, studs. They are often not the jocks, or the *extremely* popular ones. We are the mature ones.

Goalies, of course we're courageous people who utilize our bodies as a barrier to block a shot when our stick isn't available. Yes, were sexy too. We're leaders and pass on confidence to the ones around us.

actually i play middie, but i also play backup goalie. and my friend an attack laughed at me the first time he heard i was a backup. him and his team mates (his mid line and attack line) had a joke going that all the goalies they met were weird kids. actually this summer it was true though haha

This is my first year playing goalie, im a junior in high school and i love it, i stepped up to play because nobody else would and im the only one crazy enough to actually take 5 bucket shots a game, Then the old goalie returned and ive been playing defense and LSM since, i still practice for goalie but i play those other positions.

Our captains all know and love me, they know me because im the crazy, stupid, quiet kid who always shows up to play, i never give anything but 100% on the feild, i think that goalies are the guys who always show up, and never play anything but thier hardest,

A goalie is an insane man, yet we are the smartest guys around
