just perused the Crazy Parents thread, and thought this deserved a new thread...

(uh, apologies to mods up front, maybe I shoulda searched, but I'm going for it anyway...)

I am disturbed by all the enmity shown toward refs for "bad calls." There is no such thing. The ref is not there to make the right call. That would be impossible, because no rferee can see the play correctly all the time. So, as a player (or parent) you let every call, and every non-call, stand, and you keep playing the game. I personally invite everybody on TLF, all 31,000 of us, to re-visit their attitude toward ref calls...

just got done playing a inline hockey tourney this weekend, 32 games on Friday and Saturday, all with no referees! Part of the "Xtreet Sports" concept. This way all the players learn to respect the game, and their opponents, and their teammates ...if you don't play nice, the league will invite you to leave, believe me...the league stands behind its demand for respectful play by all participants.

This guy fell in an entanglement, and hit me square in the face with his stick, later the same guy rolled on his change-of-direction right into my skates from behind, and took my feet out from under me. I went down hard...every player knew that both of these incidents would have been a penalty with a ref...so play stopped briefly, while everybody picked themselves off the floor, play restarted, and away we went...

respect for the game is paramount. Sometimes, you put a ref in, and this just gives players an excuse to complain when things don't go right. Take the ref out, and you just play...and have fun. This was a great tourney, my team finished third, with a 4-3 overall record. Playing the game was what was important, not even winning the thing...

Everybody maybe add this to your way of thinking at my invitation, eh?

It's the season to be jolly, darn it, so everybody jolly-up.

ok, I was playing in game in cali, we told the ref the other team was offsides (they had 2 poles and a goalie back) and he counted, looked at us, counted them again and said and I quote "I don't like to make that call".... we lost by 1 to that team. I have to say that THAT was a bad call. Our coach flipped out, even the other teams coach just laughed and looked at us. He even said "yea we were way offsides"

I know we should be having fun, but when its something like that, and it's coming down to the season, it's becomes pretty lame.

Maybe there was no foul! Is it possible the team was playing short? Could they have been using the special substitution rule? The important thing is how many men were in the offensive end. If they didn't have more than 6 in the offensive end then there is no foul.

The ref did you a favor by even addressing it with you...I know you don't feel that way,

-but-

did the positioning of the offside players really affect the play? or would the resultant outcome have happened if players had been in correct posditions?

Did the other team gain advantage in play because of the illegal formation, or did it not really even matter, it was just a penalty that could have been called?

The point is, there is a reason that the ref didn't call it, and his stated reason isn't it. On every call, or non-call, the ref has to make a quick, often times split-second decision on what to call, or let go...

Believe it or not, I am not trying to argue this...I am just pointing out that the ref non-call was not really part of the game, the play was, and players and coaches on both teams would have fared better in the spirit of the game if their play had supported the referee in this instance.

In fact, as I re-read your game explanation, I note that this was a tie game (?) or a close game that ended as a one-point game...this was one play that didn't necessarily give the other team any resultant advantage...

How many times do you get upset over a ref who whistles every time you breath on somebody?...here's a ref that's trying to "let 'em play," and you're haranguing him for that, eh?

you need to read about TPOAD (The principle of advantage/disadvantage)
that may have been why he didnt make the call.

threads like this tend not to last very long because what we get is posts from people who arent very familiar with the rules, complaining about a situation in which they have a personal investment, and who likely werent in a good place to see what really transpired.
