What states do you think are the best at lacrosse? (considering good college teams, good high school teams, popularity of the sport, etc.)
1. Virgina
2. New Jersey
3. Maryland
4. Pennsylvania
5. New York

How do you get Virginia at number 1? Aside from UVA and some decent D3 teams, what are they bringing in to secure number one? I would say both NY and MD have superior College, and High School teams then Virginia. Between the two states I can come up with:
Syracuse
Maryland
JHU
Towson
Cortland State
Salisbury State
Albany
Navy
UMBC
As well as countless high school programs that I dont feel like listing.
For me:

1) New York

4) New Jersey
5) I'm not to sure about the last one but possibly Massachusetts or some other north eastern state. California is good but only in a few isolated areas and the game isn't as wide spread so thats why its not in my top 5

its not that connecticut is bad its just they not be top 5. But this sorta makes me proud to live in NY.(not saying that just cause i live in NY it makes me good. Im well aware of this fact) Mass would be a better #5 then Cali. but Conn and Cali are deff in top 10.

How can you say Colorado as top 5? Denver was 3rd in the Great Western conference behind OSU and ND, they were 9-7. UMASS finished 20 in the country and Denver finished 30. Denver's strength of schedule was mid thirties and UMASS was 20 I think.

im speaking of purely of high school talent while i admit i dont know to much about virginia lacrosse. I also know that parts of New York is some of the best lacrosse in the country along with maryland but we have a lot more players going to top D1 schools then california, colorado and massachusets darien was a top 10 highschool, greenwich highschool has many D1 recruits i even go to school with Matt White. The top connecticut teams can definantly hang with Maryland and New York. Also have you guys heard of the Ct Hurricanes all there players are going top 20 D1 or top 5 d3

1) NY, with 10 of 25
2) MD, with 4 of 25
3) PA, with 4 of 25
4) NJ, with 3 of 25

1) NY, with 877
2) MD, with 315
3) NJ, with 261
4) MA, with 245
5) PA, with 220

what? are you serious? they have 4 division 1 teams that I can think of that are all pretty good, and 1 that won the national title. Also they have the toughest highschool conference in the country, it's right up there and right with NY. I have no Idea how you got MA to be less than 1-2 seed.
CO, and CA are up and coming and can't be overlooked, but the best team so far from this side of the country has been ST.ignatius (spelling) they did break top 20. But that's been it. Yea there are lots of teams that will be good, but as it stands now and how it is overall, those two states have a long way to go. (Im born and raised in cali incase anyone thinks I am all that baised)

just cause they're getting better and have a lot of kids with good talent doesn't mean they'll SURPASS the places that are just ALWAYS producing good players
they can get to the point where a steady flow of good talent is coming in very soon, i'm not saying that, but all these schools that BREED excellence aren't gonna like, let up, therefore..the status will like remain the same down the line, just the playing field will be a little more fair, so to speak
Virginia is not better than Maryland, it's not even close, in fact in general virginia kids aren't good at lacrosse, its really only the University. Trust me I live in the DC Metro area in maryland, not far from Virginia, Baltimore, DC, Georgtown Prep, and Landon.

VMI???? are you serious? At 42 years of age, if I was eligible and could make the team, I would have gotten field time against VMI in the UVa @ VMI game. Seriously, UVa and VMI on the same lacrosse field makes as much sense as The Citadel playing away at Clemson in football.
NY as a #1 state is kinda tough, though. The Island programs and those guys from CNY State are completely different styles of play. B'More kids and Island kids play a similar style, that CNY stuff is some serious blue collar lax. If I were to build a team and had to shoose one more guy of three, one representing The Island, one from MD and the other from CNY, I would take the kid from West Genny / Carthage, etc any day over the other two because of simple toughness.
Colorado??? Dude, the Denver area may be up and coming and produced a few guys succesful at Denver but a powerhouse, that's as funny as VMI being a powerhouse.
PA is coming on strong, ;articularly the west side of the state.
Jersey???? What exit?

Central New York and Long Island cant be counted as 2 states. But seriously Maryland is your number 1 New York 2 and lets get honest here guys how is New Jersey not 3? Delbarton was the number 1 team in the nation for a huge part of the season and other than New York and Maryland who produces more division 1 talent? Yeah Pa is close behind But i remember Ned Crotty with a hat trick in the final, Austin Winter being patriot league rookie of the year,Tom Duerr scoring a goal in the national title which was a one goal game. What do you mean where are people getting NJ from? They have 3 nationally ranked highschool teams, Rutgers and Princeton both both finished in the top 20 and we have solid D1 players everywhere. How is Conn possibly better than NJ? TYeah they have game but NJ's top high school programs are much better than Conn's and we have a pro team. Oh I also forgot we have how many national titles?

NJ sends the most kids D1 every year behind new york and maryland. NJ had the very first high school lacrosse team. NJ has delbarton, who was ranked the #1 high school team for a good portion of the '07 season (not to mention other very good teams like montgomery, mountain lakes, and summit). NJ is where guys like matt poskay, ned crotty, and alex hewitt are from.

i still say, and this is no offense to the western and central teams...or Virginia for that matter cause i know they all have a lot of good d1 kids coming and stuff, but like honestly...New england, well at least CT and MA, and then like jersey, MD and NEw york, instead of like a few scattered good teams, i mean, almost every team is atleast somewhat competitive, and even the worst teams are sending kids to play at good schools. i mean 2 years ago we went like 1 and 16(2nd year of varsity, although we did better the first year haha) and one of our kids got a full ride to towson(although i don't think he took it)
my friend used to live here, and now lives in louisianna, and plays a lot of colorado and texas teams, and says...they're not bad persay, but it's just not the same in the middle teams.
So yes, higher ranked teams will be on the same level, but state wise, there is more depth

Anyone want to take the time to list in order the number of NCAA programs in the top 5 states. I will go ahead and tell you that NY has the highest, and it isn't even close for 2nd place, for the number of NCAA varsity programs, but the state that is currently tied for 5th might surprise a lot of folks.
So I had a little time on my hand and did the math for all the the state. This is from laxpower for the 2007 season, so a state may have a new program for the 2008 year that isn't in the total.
1. NY- 54 NY leads in total # of D1 and D3 programs, tied w/NC in D2 w/8
2. PA- 36
3. MA- 27
4. MD- 14
5.(T) VA-12
(T) NC-12 Tied with NY for # of D2 teams with 8
7. CT- 11
8. NJ- 9
9.(T) OH- 8
(T) VT- 8
11.(T) ME- 7
(T) NH- 7
13. RI- 5
14.(T) CA- 3
(T) CO- 3
16.(T) DE- 2
(T) SC- 2
(T) DC- 2 {I know that DC isn't a state per se, but didn't know how else to include them and that's why the next number begins with 18 instead of 19}
18-22.(T) with 1 each
FL
IN
KY
MO
WV
227 total teams with NY having almost 1/4 total number.

At high school level in raw numbers we have
NY:339
MD:204
PA:182
CA:173
MA:152
--
NJ: 151
VA:130
that doesn't mean the better HS lax is in CA over NJ. but it is interesting.
Thats means absolutely nothing. Ny and CA are gigantic compared to NJ. i think that maryland and Pa are bigger than us too.

If you compare number of high schools to population, the state with the most teams per capita is a state that NO ONE has mentioned yet:
Delaware has 37 high school teams with well under 1 million population.
Then comes Maryland and New England. NY would be way up there except for NYC.

This thread takes into consideration a number of categories, not just college skill level. If it were, "who's going to win the National Championship, than no CO wouldn't be on the list. People should keep some of these things in mind while considering Colorado:
1. Two pro teams (Mammoth and Outlaws)
2. I believe Colorado is tops in game attendance.
3. CSU and CU, although club level, were number 1 and 2 in nation.
4. Perhaps the most popular tournament in the country (Vail Shootout)
5. Huge growth in the number of youth and high school teams.
Just a hunch, but I'll bet that Colorado's annual number of D-1 recruits heading to college has been on a steady rise for years. With the possibility that CU or CSU becoming D-1 programs, the number of D-1 recruits coming to CO will most definitely increase... I mean, where would you rather live, Colorado or New Jersey?
The back-east states have years and years of history that has created a good foundation, not to mention the state-population pools (like NY's) to pull from.

High school teams in Maryland are much stronger than they are in New York. Now don't go flipping out right now just think about it on any day I would pick the best team in Maryland over the best team in New York now matter what and I don't live in either of the two states. Plus the high schools in Maryland send their guys to D1 schools and the guys stay there. West Gennese is one of New Yorks top programs yet they don't have many impact D1 players. And the best states for lacrosse shouldn't be picked by how many teams a state has and forget about those championships from 70's,80's and even early 90's because lacrosse was completely different back than there was no recruiting competition. If Matt Danowski came out in 1985 do you honestly think he would be at Duke? Did they even have a program than? Forget the past were talking now and Maryland produces the most talent hands down.

trust me i know florida isnt in the top 5 or even the top 10. but lacrosse is catching one big time in florida now. we have 2 D2 schools and i think 1 more that is forming. then there is FSU which is a college club team that could play in one of the divisons if it wasnt for title 10.
a travel team from florida plays in the hotbeds tournament and finished in third the past two years. i know of 2 kids from florida that r playin D1 rite now and 2 that will be next year. that may not seem like alot but for a sport that has caught on huge in the last 5 years that is pretty good. those r 4 kids that i know. also it would be 3 playin D1 next year if one kid didnt chose to go to a D3 school so he could play rite away.

I made this post in another thread but it's also relevant here so I'll re-post and elaborate.
Following you'll find a break down of the top 100 high school lacrosse programs in the country according to laxpower.com. I know not everyone agrees with their ranking completely, but you have to agree that it works reasonably well at giving one a general idea of where teams fall on a national scale. You also need to concede that the number of top 100 high school programs a state has is a reasonably accurate way of determining the amount of talent it produces.
NY 42
CT 10
MD 9
NJ 6
MA 6
PA 5
VA 5
OH 5
CO 4
CA 3
NH 2
TX 1
FL 1
DC 1
So New York seems to be a pretty clear cut winner in the way of total talent by a large margin. Another interesting number is the concentration of talent. I did this by dividing the population of the top five states by the number of top 100 programs they have.
CT- 1 per 350k residents
NY- 1 per 475k
MD- 1 per 622k
MA- 1 per 1.1m
NJ- 1 per 1.4m
The results seem to support what I’ve always thought to be true, that Connecticut, while not having the best lacrosse in the country, has the highest concentration of good lacrosse.
This holds true all the way up through the college ranks. CT has a handful of very respectable D1/3 schools as well as it's very high concentration of quality high school lacrosse. I'm not arguing that CT is the "best" lacrosse state, but there's really no question about it deserving a top 5 spot.

va is not garbage. think about landon and georgetown prep...even though they are technically maryland teams, a lot of their players live in virginia and grew up playing virginia rec and club leagues. you also have roanoke, hampden-sydney, and lynchburg in d3. i think that virginia definitely deserves to be in the top 10...while not as strong as new york, ct, md, or jersey, i think va lax is stronger than pa.
i guess i am biased because i'm from virginia, but i don't understand why everyone is incredulous that va has god lax.
also, what is this florida business? does fl have a d1 lacrosse team? has any fl hs been in the top 50 lacrosse programs? i didn't even know lacrosse was played in florida.

Last last week-2 weeks ago Syracuse alone held 4 #1 spots in Div1,Div2,NJCAA and Highschool with a 3rd ranked in Div3
they have Syracuse, Hobart, Albany, Cornell, Hofstra, Stony brook, Siena, Canisius, Binghamton, wagner!, Marist, and Manhattan. That is 12 Div 1 teams. Not to mention le moyne, Cortland, Onondaga, and herkimer.
Also in 2006 NY won Div2, Div3, NJCAA and made it to semis in Div1. Not just NY but Syracuse area alone. Maybe this year Syracuse area can win them all. That would be a hell of a year for us.
