I know alot of you guys answer some of the questions here with, just talk to your coach. I to have a problem, but i don't know if i can talk to him about it. This year im the oldest LSM on the team, but there is alot of talent below me.Although i did not play varsity as a soph, i sat Varsity and scrimaged on the starting Middie line which would be considered 2nd LSM (The line was all seniors last year). Also, my JV coach said i would get alot of time on V and my varsity coach said i could play in college. The season doesn't start for i while but i really want to know where my position is on the team. It doesn't seem right for me to just ask him, am i gonna play? He is an older guy and not really open with the players, should i ask him and what should i ask

Where do you think you stand? Are the younger guys better than you? You say they are talented, but you don't tell us if they are better than you. That's obviously the most important piece of information to determine where you stand on the team.

I think that there are some areas, where the kids are better, flat out.... but i am definalty better in other areas. Im faster and bigger. In my opinion i play better team defense. I think he is a better take away player, and he has a weird knack for running with the ball (When ever i see him do it, there is no one around him, he has it easy?) It's not like expecting anything to happen, i have been working hard on improving, but im scared its not enough.

The first thing that I would work on is self confidence, especially being an LSM. Go in with the mind set that it is your job because you are the more capable, mature player. If you have self doubt everyone will sense that including your coach.
I would take inventory of your skills versus the competition and use the preseason to shore up the deficiencies through offseason work. This will also help build your self confidence.
Talk to your coach, but focus on your team instead of yourself. Ask your coach how you can help him improve the team, including helping with the development of younger players. If you have offseason workouts ask your coach how you can help in a leadership role. I've never known a coach that responded negatively to a player asking to help his team. This will also send a clear message to your coach that you intend to have the LSM job and intend to be a leader on the team. From your coach's feedback I think you'll figure out pretty quickly where you stand without directly asking the coach.
Good luck.
