Please answer using NFHS and NCAA rules

Attackman A1 has just scored.

a) Just after his goal, A1 pulls on the strings of his crosse that appear to be aprox. 4" in length

b) Just after his goal and just after the official has asked to check his stick, A1 pulls on the strings of his crosse that appear to be approx. 4" in length.

c) After his goal and just prior to the ensuing FO as the FO men are about go down, the lead official sees A1 pull on the strings of his crosse that appear to be approx. 4" in length.

NFHS Rules:

A and C are legal. B is illegal. 1 minute automatically given to A1 and if stick is illegal, 1 or 3 minutes is added to that depending on what official finds wrong with the stick

Situation A (A1 Goal/A1 pulls 4" strings):
NFHS - goal is good - no penalty.
NCAA - no goal - 1-min NR USC - crosse removed from game until strings are trimmed to 2".
Situation B (A1 Goal/Stick Check/A1 pulls 4" strings):
NFHS - automatic 1-min NR USC - no goal - crosse can return to game.
NCAA - automatic 1-min NR USC - no goal - crosse removed from game until strings are trimmed to 2".
Situation C (A1 Goal/ A1 pulls 4" strings prior to FO):
NFHS - no call.
NCAA - By NCAA Rule same as B - automatic 1-min NR USC - no goal - crosse removed from game until strings are trimmed to 2" - good luck making this call.

PBoyd on the money as far as I can tell. My hidden agenda with the quiz:

1. I assume the new NCAA 2" rule is just like the old 6" string rule in that no penalty, remove, fix it, and stick can return.
2. The new NCAA rule about no goal-1-min NR USC for pulling strings after a goal HAS to have a time limit. Would that time limit be from the moment the goal is scored until the moment the ref asks to see the stick? What about if no stick check is done after a goal...what would the time limit be then?
More of a mechanics question, I guess.
No way a ref is going to throw a flag on a player after the dust has settled after a goal, subs have come in, and you are about ready to do a FO.

I didn't want to answer this until I got a chance to see what ends up in the rulebook, but I do have some thoughts:

1. If the 2" rule is the same as the 6" rule, it has no teeth. You look at my stick, it has 2" strings. I score a goal and manage to pull my string without you seeing me, so now my strings are 4". There's no penalty, you tell me to fix my strings. I go the bench, pound my pocket back out, and they're back to 2" again. If it happens again, I get a 1:00 NR USC penalty, but the goal doesn't come off the board. I really don't see what this will accomplish, because the strings aren't long until after you pull them. I think it needed to be a penalty.

2. I could be wrong, but I thought the penalty was for pulling the strings in general, not just after a goal. The press release said "The use of pull strings to alter the depth of the pocket is illegal." So, I come up to the faceoff planning to do a stick check and the guy realizes and pulls the string before I ask him for it: illegal.

I don't know how the penalties will read, but if you do a stick check on the goal scorer at the faceoff and its illegal the goal comes off the board. I can't imagine why this would be different.

Agree - we nee to wait for final language and probably adapt based on COC/NCAA clinic discussions/direction.
However, I believe the intent is to penalize "pulling strings" immediately after a goal is scored and prior to crosse/equipment inspection. I don't think that we want to enforce this any other time unless linked to a goal/stick check or stick check scenario. The same policy would apply to a perceived "pinched" crosse - just because it appears that the ball may get stuck in the crosse during play - we don't stop the game and check the stick but we would assess a penalty if illegal during a stick check. NCAA: If a goal is scored and the scoring player "pulls" the strings on his crosse to alter the pocket this is a 1-min automatic NR penalty and we still have to check the crosse. If a player comes up for a FO after scoring a goal (after the dust settles as EME indicates) - there is no automatic USC call but the stick check may show the pocket to be illegal.

I don't know NCAA too well but I'll give it a shot:
A: NFHS: Since you're not doing a stick check there is no penalty
NCAA: 1 Min Personal Foul (i am not sure if this is what is being used) For strings being over 2 inches long) no overturned goal because no stick check was requested

B: NFHS: Goal Overturned, Stick removed from game, 3 min N/R
NCAA: Goal Overturned, 3 Min N/R + 1 Min Personal Foul for illegal string length, I dont know what happens to the stick

C: NFHS: If the official feels the urge to check the stick he may however he doesn't have to. If the stick is found to be illegal the goal is overturned only if this is the person who scored the goal. If the stick is illegal then whatever caused it to be illegal will warrant the appropriate penalty time and response.
NCAA: Same as above plus 1 min NR for illegal string length if the stick is checked.

I'm new to the game of lacrosse and want to learn as much as possible about the game (i.e. rules, drills, stringing techniques, etc.).

In regards to the OP, which strings are being discussed and how would 4" vs
2" strings affect the crosse?
