iv been doing a bit of PMing lately and would it be possible to make some sort of alert as to when you have one? cause right now, if you don't LOOK for it, you'd never know. and when im working bids or whatever it'd be a lot easier.

Go to "Edit Options". Then scroll down to the second block entitled "Messaging & Notification", and then look at the bottom of that block. You'll see a check box entitled "Show New Private Message Notification Pop-up". Check that box and hit "save changes" at the bottom of the page.

That will give you the Pop-Up Box Lilaxgurl talked about.

I used the pop-up thing once for a little while, it annoyed me. I don't really have trouble noticing though, I just see the number.
