Here is what I caught in the 2008 NCAA book:
Page 15. Use of a “slightly textured” ball is legal. I guess they mean such as one used in the MLL. If a coach wants to use a smooth ball, then home team must comply.
Page 16. If a ball stop is used, then dimensions for that single ball stop are provided. Key one is the stop can’t be thicker than ¼”.
Page 17 Diagram of the stick head sidewalls is clearer.
Page 18. Strings used to attach the pocket to the crosse are limited to hanging length of 2”. Get crosse off field and fix, etc. just like the old 6” rule. Use of pull strings to alter the depth of the pocket is illegal. Will be interesting to see how they want that observed and adjudicated.
Page 20. Deleted sentence about game jerseys that extend below the waistband needing to be tucked in.
Page 22. Dropped all that language about football pads and helmets…was a throwback anyway to a bygone era.
Page 24. Explicit grayed area about requiring a designated keeper on the field at all times. Actually, this isn’t new as it was in the IP section last year (and still is in 2008).
Page 25. Officials may entertain questions from coaches during halftime.
Page 25. Adequate balls on end lines are okay in lieu of retrievers.
Page 30. Final two minutes. Changed language. Team ahead required to keep it in and not just warned to keep it in.
Page 33. The one we all knew was coming. Before the FO, any violation by FOGO or wing player or guys in goal areas….FOGO man has to sub out while play is whistled in.
AR 22 on page 36 reinforces this.
Page 36. Argument here on the Forum about the releasability of wing players after a FO violation. AR 24 says wing folks are released.
Page 38. On shot, it’s player’s body that counts that is nearest in awarding possession, etc.
Page 39 Reinforces on offsides that gloved hand on the crosse on the line=offsides.
Page 39-40. Cleans up language about ball in flight as period ends. Nothing new, really.
Page 41. An AR was dropped in the Goal Scored section. It was AR 40 in 2007. Dropped because it is covered in the Goal Not Counted Section.
Page 42. Explicit language (item “p”) about goal not counting if scorer adjusts crosse after official asks for it. This was actually covered on page 62 in 2007.
Page 45. Def. count stops when ball touches ground on or across midline. Lower on that page is the language about a new 10-sec. count starting when ball (after being in attack area) hits ground or player outside the attack area. I wish in the ensuing ARs in the next few pages they had used “hitting ground or player” instead of just “hitting ground.”
Page 56. Team Timeouts. Language now includes stepping on or beyond attack area line in allowing for a TO.
Page 62. Explicit AR in gray about goal not being allowed if scorer pulls strings on his crosse after the goal REGARDLESS if official asks him for stick. Again, will wait for direction on enforcement on this one. How long is his stick still live?
Page 63 AR 15 and Page 76 ARs 37-40 All clarify what we do when a goal scorer doesn’t have mouthpiece, or proper uniform, or legal equipment. All very helpful
Page 65. USC. The sentence about “hiding that 10th man and then subbing him in late” is gone. I don’t see it reappearing elsewhere.
Page 68. Crease Violations and Goalie Interference. Adds language to section “c” that these infractions are lumped together. In other words: “Any crease violation or interference with the goalkeeper while he and the ball are in the crease…”
Page 78. Stalling language is a bit clearer. Explicit note about putting stall back on even after a def. team has stopped the slow whistle via a possession. So when play resumes after penalty, stall goes back on. Sorry, LR, this differs from the change I made in the NFHS book. If I had only known….
Page 85. Not in gray, but a new AR about what to do when there’s a flag down and then the ball goes back into the crease to the keeper who is then interfered with.
Page 89 has a new non-grayed AR 31 about simultaneous fouls involving technicals on one team and personals on the other and you will have to read it yourself.
