I had two friends get this surgery. They really both couldn't walk unassisted for about 2-3 months, and even then it was minimal. They each had to wear knee braces in their respective sports(field hockey, lacrosse).

All they said that it is a lot of pain, a lot of stress, and a lot of work for rehabilitation. It takes a bit more than a year to get to 100%, and even then they say they aren't the same.

Jeez... it was never that hard for me. And I had it done 3 times. Did they have cartilage repaired too?

If they put you to sleep, then of course it won't hurt. After the surgery is just like any other, you're groggy from the anesthesia and you'll have discomfort in whichever leg was worked on. It would hurt if I moved it. They might give you a nerve block if you want one, and the nerve block will make the pain go away, but your leg will be completely dead. You won't be able to move it, feel it, or put weight on it. It'll should wear off in 12-24 hours.

With my doctor, he told me to get up and start walking around without crutches as soon as the nerve block wore off (the next day). My house at the time was only one floor, so I didn't go up and down stairs, but I probably wouldn't have been able to for about a week. What you do for the first few weeks is really up to your doctor.

And whatever you do, say yes when they offer fentanyl.

Any questions you have really need to be directed towards your doctor, the surgeon, and the physical therapist (if you will be working with one to rehab). They can best answer any and all of your questions than members of an internet forum. While some, like those who've posted above may have gone through surgery and rehab, results will always vary and since the vast majority of this board does not have the medical background (given that the vast majority of this board isn't old enough for medical school) to give proper medical advice and it is forum policy to close threads such as these.
