View Full Version : Not really popular, but great bands...

I'm not really sure why, but I juts like to post threads about music. So today I decided to see if anybody knows any bands that arn't really that famous but they think are really good. I personally think that the band Dream Theater is one of the most underated bands out their. Obviously they are somewhat famous, but they are a really talented band and they've been around for like 20 years. My favorite songs by them are Constant Motion and Panic Atack (watch the panic attack vid on youtube, the opening bass riff is amazing). The best part about this band is that everybody in the band grew up on Long Island (Where i live...).

almost all hardcore bands are underrated for their amazing skills. I personally like Unearth and War of Ages and a little killswitch (i know not all of these are hardcore.)

What makes a band "not popular"? Not being on MTV? Most of the band's I've seen so far have a large fanbase, maybe not at your school or whatever, but bands like KSE, Coheed, RBF, Dream Theater and Sublime are huge.

Not well known hard/metalcore and some thrash:

Hug them for me please.

lol..... that may not go well on my part. I got stuck in the pit at their last concert in NC.... my ankle is still messed up. Whole band saw me in it, they said they never saw someone attempt to crowd surf out of the pit as fast as i did.....ended up on stage tho.

Well, for anyone that was confused about what i meant by not really popular i mean underrated and also not really one of those bands like Metallica or Van Halen that get all the publicity. So both of those things, even though they do have a large fanbase.

Rancid, Sublime, Social Distortion, Operation Ivy, Hepcat, The Specials, Real Big Fish, Flogging Molly.

see almost all of those bands aren't huge(with the exception of Sublime and Flogging Molly) but inside the "punk" scene EVERY knows these bands.

but to add to the list... Tiger Army, The Nekromantix, Mark Collie, Jake Owen, Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band, The Transplants(everyone only knows dimonds and guns which is a shame), Trent Tomlinson.

the list goes on and on

Dragon force

The Foxboro Hot Tubs- free album- picture green day vocals with beatles style music

Saul Williams- aka Niggy Tardust- free album- decent hip hop/rap, some good songs.

3OH3- Two white doctors from Boulder, CO, amazing beats, and lyrics. More of a rap genre.

Blacktop Manhatten- not around anymore, but their few songs are real good.

The Darnkess- Amazing classic rock band. High pitched vocals, huge in europe.

God Forbid- don't know much about fanbase, good music, a little heavier than Avenged 7X

Iggy Pop- Huge punk rocker from a past era. A revolutionary, but too few know about him, or at least around here.

Maylene & the sons of disaster: Great southern rock, with a heavy metal aspect. Singer from underoath

Nine Lives: This band is amazing, but near impossible to find. Their site is broken, and finding music from them other than compilations is impossible.

Ozomatli.- Multi cultured hip hop/ pop rock, decent stuff, some rapping, notbad overall

Saosin: Gained a ton of publicity in past year or two, really good alternative/ emo band.

Shabutie: for all those coheed fans, this is a side project. Some good songs, mostly softer than Coheed.

Steriogram: Walkie Talkie man was their only hit. Decent pop/punk band, some catchy stuff.

Story of the Year: Once again, don't know too much about fanbase, but they are real good.

Anyone want links or song reccomendations, let me know.

my personal fave band, The Receiving End of Sirens. Their lyrics are beyond amazing. Their sound is kinda experimental, but it doesnt stray to far away from alt/emo. I love the fact that each of their songs tells its own story, but it still ties in to the album(which flows flawlessly).
Also, another good band is Faktion. Their guitarist pulls off some crazy solos and overall their music is the type that you could listen to all day nonstop.

Dragonforce unknown? Serious?

Anyway, I've got a WHOLE bunch.

Animal Collective.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxvGHQHiY70
They're sort of an... experimental group. It's tough for me to define their sound. It sure is infectious, though.

The Blood Brothers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwZ0OuUrDes
Experimental punk? Maybe hardcore? Dunno. Very few people will like this music, but I think it's great.

Death From Above 1979.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzNrYRqH35Q
Punk(?) over bass and synths. Plus, they're Canadian. What a shame they broke up. They (under the moniker of MSTRKRFT) also make some great remixes.

The Fall of Troy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgqjYEP-RH4
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1359658201335589483&q=the+end+of+the+flying+v&total=2278&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=2
Just about the only hardcore I like. Pay attention to Erak's (vocalist and guitarist) playing when they zoom in on the frets in the first video. Mind-blowing. He's also got a pretty nice voice if you listen to some of his studio tracks.

Justice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfHc7JO2fKc
French electronica/house duo. I challenge you not to dance. Genesis is (in my opinion) not their best track but it's all I could find on YouTube besides D.A.N.C.E., so there.

Porcupine Tree.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfmOtTMa-8M
British prog-rock-ish band brought to you by Steve Wilson. I like to think of them as a sort-of "Opeth Lite." Beautiful video, by the way.

Ratatat.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6GbC2F5RfU
Electronica duo. Think lots of guitars, with a side of synths. They sound different live than in the studio, but great either way. Some people like to call them "electronic hip-hop." I'm not one of them.

Saul Williams.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzY2-GRDiPM (some language and an awesome beard, just a warning)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1llNYAlYrc&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRsgavuG4sg&feature=related
Hip-hop-industrial-dance-ish, and spoken word poetry. One of the greatests lyricists I've ever encountered, his spoken word is life-changing, and he has an incredibly dynamic voice. Also, he recently teamed with Trent Reznor on his latest album, which is a huge bonus.

The World/Inferno Friendship Society.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbAautBiKGA (again, a little language, apologies)
Cabaret? Punk? Throwback to the '30s? Weird? A mouthful? All of the above. Definitely not for everyone. I wise I were as cool as Jack Terricloth.

65daysofstatic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WneDU-K3Sww
Instrumental post-rock. Think Explosions in the Sky, but more drums. Killer beats.

Phew.

DANGIT. Someone mentioned Saul Williams before me. Oh well. By the way, he's also my avatar and signature images.

Sort of. Johnny is extremely shrill and harsh, and Jordan provides a deeper, lower, more normal parallel. It's a nice dynamic between the two. Like I said, not for everyone.

Our Lady Peace. Spiritual Machines is a sick, sick, sick album that no one bought. I like the New Pornographers as well. Canadian bands are generally superior to much of the emo/clone/butt-rock that america produces.

People have named some of the BALLINIST bands that I thought no one heard of. Streetlight Manifesto is AWESOME, OP Ivy is just classic, Authority Zero is pretty good, Pepper is chill, and Andrew WK is the MAN. He walked me to car after Warped Tour when I was like...ten. He was signing autographs and security told him to leave so he met everyone at a 711. Me and my friends were too young to meet him there, so he just walked us to the car.

But if you guys like pepper, authority zero, sublime, etc. check out the Low Life. They don't exist anymore and they're hard to find, but really chill.

Kalmah is great if you're into metal. If you like Children of Bodom, they're pretty similar. They're not clones though. Once you listen to them, you'll know if you're listening to them. There's some great solos and good songwriting.

Will Haven

Hardcore band form Sacramento that's been around for a while (though they were on hiatus from 2001 until 07) and one of my favorite bands of all time. They're latest album The Hierophant was one of my favs of the year despite having a new lead singer who actually didn't change the sound too much. Oddly enough they've gotten a leg up from other popular bands who've supported them throughout the years namely the deftones (Chino produced their latest as well as appeared in a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUNJJlIp4So) from their 3rd album getting car jacked). Other bands like Slipknot, Soulfly (previous singer Grady guested on their second album Primitive on the track Pain with Chino) and Crowbar.

I highly recommend them, I'm also pretty certain I'm the only person on the East Coast who is relatively aware of them.

Edit - live video supporting new album, my favorite track so far Caviar With Maths (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCWtghLE5iw)

The best part about this band is that everybody in the band grew up on Long Island (Where i live...).

agreed, dream theater. also: guns n roses, pantera, foghat, the scorpions, janes

His voice is horriable, I know you don't technacily sing in rap, but it sucks. It sounds like it was made in a basement, there are so many better underground artist, actually making there stuff in a basement, and it sounds 10 times better.

Deserve more radio play; yes, do i want them to have more; no. I like them to not have much radio player, then the fans are true fans, not just "i heard their song on the radio and auto-love them", and I don't know why, but I like some of the bands I listen to to not be overly popular.

the band "Jaguar Love" has the lead singer of the Blood Brothers. They rock pretty hard as well. You should check them out. Even people who might not have liked the Blood Brothers could probably like Jaguar Love, they're a bit more subdued and controlled but still have that touch of violence and recklessness that johny whitney brings to the plate with his singing. Also has a Votolato brother, Cody (who was also in the Blood Brothers). His brother Rocky Votolato is pretty well known as being a singer songwriter.
