During a faceoff in the center part of the field before possession has been established, Team A commits a) technical foul b) personal foul. On the ensuing restart, Team B starts with the ball. Are players behind the defensive area lines released before this whistle?
Please use 2008 NFHS and 2008 NCAA rulebooks in your answer.

For high school, using my BRAND NEW 2008 rule book,Rule 4-4 art. 2, "when the whistle [for the face-off] sounds to start play... all [non-midfield] players are confined to their areas until a player of either team has gained possession...or a whistle stops play for a time serving foul."

So the rule is clear that a whistle for a personal foul releases the players behind the defensive area.

It seems to me that no player has "gained possession" from a technical foul until the whistle restarts play, so I would think that the players are not released for a technical foul whistle. Also, the reference to "time serving foul" makes no sense if players are relased for any foul.

This result seems strange, and I have to admit that I never caught this distinction before.

Keep digging, Woodenstick, as both books provide answers to both situations.

I don't have the 2008 Fed. book yet. The 2007 rulebook is rather vague about this, so am I out of play until my assigner comes through?

However, if Woodie is baffled, I can assure y'all that I'll be at a loss as well.

OK, next try:

Ruling 4.4 situation A, technical foul during face-off, ball is awarded to offended team and "all players released only upon restart of play."

So, personal foul during f/o, players released from defensive areas before restart, technical foul w/ no time served, players only released on the restart?

Concure with Woodie for NFHS and NCAA - but where does the play restart for NFHS and NCAA plus what happens to Team A's FO guy in NCAA?
