View Full Version : Would you wear shoulder pads if you didn't have to?

Personally, as a defenseman, I would. I wear these really old pads and I cut off the shoulder caps, but I would still want some protection for my heart if I take a shot right there.

as a defensive guy i would still wear pads but im buying liners so i dont take a shot to the chest.

I'd continue to wear liners with hard caps, they weigh almost nothing and don't restrict mobility at all. Having a little bit of protection for the joint is worth it.

i thought i was a BA by wearing wimpy shoulder pads but after George Boiardi (cornell defense men) died after being struck by a shot, i went back to a full sized pad.

i wouldn't. maybe i just dont notice because im playing, but it doesn't feel like i get hit in the shoulder pad region much, mostly the arm pad/glove region. by the way i play attack.

A lot of local pick up leagues around here don't make you, all you have to have is a helmet and gloves, but people tend to hack you harder when you don't wear pads.

Its indoor, so I actually wear more padding; rib guards, full shoulder pads and arm guards as opposed to my field setup which is minimal shoulder padding and small elbow pads.

I would still wear them getting hit in the chest/shoulders would kill.

i dont wear them just because i think ill die without them. i wear them because if i go shoulder to shoulder wiht someone going after a groundball or something, that could easily break my collar bone. or my shoulder or something. i would deffinetly wear them.

Let me know how being a "BA" is working out for you when you're my age.

He was saying that he is going to wear them, so he doesn't have any long term effects...

I would. With the pads I rock, theres no reason not to.

I try to wear the bare minimum when it comes to pads, but if I didn't have to wear shoulder pads, I would, because I wanna protect my chest, I would probably cut the caps off still though.

I would wea my pads. i would just, like always, take off the bicep pads. in my indoor there is only stick cheking no body cheching and i still wear shoulder pads

I would wear shoulder pads still. Even though they are basically nothing. I have the Warrior 5.0's and I cut everything you can off, but if i dont have a pad on even if its a small one I will worry about it constantly.

I never wore shoulder pads until I was playing in a senior game (slowed down a lot) and got inadvertantly whacked on the shoulder bone-nub.

Hurt like the dickens. For days.

Now I wear shoulder pads all the time. Why risk it? The pads these days don't impede play and keep you from getting an annoying ow-ey.

Yeah, fighting for groundballs without shoulder pads would result in many ow-eys.

I would, but I wear smaller shoulder pads anyways, so I'm not limited in mobility as much.

as a d-man, i wouldnt. whenever i wear em, i can notice them every shift i play. although the dont restrict me too much, id rather be able to freely move.

as a goalie i would wear my pads regardless. cause getting hit with a ball just hurts. when i played middie, yea id still wear em cause they protect your collarbones, they are the easiest bones to break in your body, only takes 18pounds of force to break one and im sure that a d man can put more than that on you with his stick. so yea imagine having to clear the crease and breaking one. ouch town, population you.

I would.... I have to wear bicep pads, I always end up with huge bruises if I dont; shoulder caps I don't really need though.

I know a kid who cuts his bicep pads of, then he cuts a triangle shape out of it (1 layer, or 2 if its thin), then puts it on top of his hear area on his shoulderpad. I thought it was a pretty good idea. I tried them on and you can't tell that its heavier, and it gives more protection in the heart area, the most important part of a shoulder pad.

i would wear shoulder pads just take off the bicep pads. (and doesn't is annoy the [no profanity] out of you when you see kids with flapping shoulder pads, i know thats random i just had to put that out there)

I don't have too and I don't wear them. International rules don't require them. Come to think of it, I have seen maybe about 6 players wear them and I have played many a Japanese team, British teams, and Spanish teams.

**** i've taken shots to the chest and such and i know that shots would break ribs if it wasn't for the shoulder pads. i even still use the caps cause attackmen suck at checks and have given some nasty tomahawks on my shoulder, and i seen people break colarbones from really bad ones.

So I dont...

For me its really just the placebo effect. I doubt mine would do anything in the state of an emergency. But I like the feeling that they could do something.

i just wear small ones and cut off the shoulder caps
you'd have to be stupid as hell not too. imagine a broken collar bone. sucks, trust me.

laxattack11

on attack i probably wouldnt because you dont have many shots coming at you, and i barely wear any now.

but when i play middie i would because you accually face shots and i'd rather not break some ribs or worse...

I like the bruises, I always get them on my biceps, (I don't wear bicep pads). It's like, when I have the bruises, I know I did something, kind of like the acheing the day after a long practice, I love stuff like that.

And like I said, if i wore them when not needed, it would be for chest saftey.

on attack i probably wouldnt because you dont have many shots coming at you, and i barely wear any now.
I've been hit with some shots, if you play crease at all there's a slight risk. It's not a huge risk, if you're paying attention, since you should be able to get out of the way, or not be in the way in the first place, but you never know.

I would wear them. I want to keep my body intact, thank you very much. I mean they aren't that restrictive for the amount of protection they provide.
