Howdy!

I'm conducting a training soon for area table personnel with a focus on accurate record keeping.

In the NCAA Rule Book appendix under 'Goal' I'm confused by a sentence:
A ball that enters the goal as a result of being propelled by the offensive team must be credited as a shot and a goal. A ball that ricochets off another player and scores will be awarded as a shot & goal by the player deemed to have scored the goal.

So, offensive player #1 takes a shot, it ricochets off of offensive player #2's arm, leg, shoulder, whatever, and enters the goal. Who would be the player deemed to have scored the goal? Who would you, the official, give the goal to so that we, the table scorers, are crediting the same player.

I can understand that if player 1 shoots and it bounces off the post and then ricochets off of player 2 and enters. Player 1 is credited with a shot and then player 2 is credited with a shot and goal.

Just wanting some clarification before the training :)

Thanks!!

I would most likely give it to the initial shooter. That is just my gut feeling. Perhaps a more veteran official can comment.

I saw this a few days ago from a post on another thread by 3rdPersonPlural.

http://www.uslacrosse.org/mens_div/pdf/Scorer.pdf that may help you out some.

And thank you for wanting to work on the table. A well ran table makes the officials life much easier.

it goes to the person who touched it last i think, like in the finals when Quinzani tipped that ball and it went into the goal

im no ref but i would award the goal to the deflectee (if thats what youd call it) if he or she made an attempt to deflect the ball into the goal and did not just get hit without realizing

But who is the scorer if no attacer was shooting (eg.: The defender passes the ball to the goalie and the goalie fails to catch the pass and unfortunaly it makes it way to the goal ...)

After some more thinking, if A1 takes a shot and it bounces off the post and then bounces off A2's body, goal/shot to A1.

If A1 takes a shot and it bounces off the post and is headed towards A2 and A2 makes a deliberate movement to change the direction of the ball, I would award A1 with a shot and A2 with the goal.

Its the same as if A1 shoots and bounces off of B1's helmet, B1 doesnt get the goal.

Now the bigger question is who do you give the goal to if the goalie brings his stick back too far and the ball goes in?

That's easy, it would be an "own" goal, as no person from the opposing team actually took a shot at the goal in an attempt to score.

No one, if he doesn't drop it.

Team goal if the ball becomes loose inside the goal:

Team goal—A goal scored by a member of the defensive team in its own
goal is a team goal.

The goal is not awarded to any specific member of the team awarded the goal. This is pretty important: if you award the goal to a specific offensive player, the goal could be disallowed if that player's stick is illegal.

As officials, we aren't really supposed to worry about these scorekeeping issues during the play of the game. We get the goal scorer for our own purposes (to help keep things straight; so we can disallow the goal correctly if the stick is found to be illegal before play resumes), and we'll share that info if asked, but otherwise it's not our focus. Don't ask me who gets the assist!

If the ball stays in the keeper's crosse in the cage, no goal. If it falls in from the stick while in the cage, goal unless there was a play-on called due to keeper interference or a crease violation. Then it's a restart at the midfield X.

As for who to credit with the goal, the rules as quoted above are vaguely written on purpose, IMHO, and you must use judgement. A deflected shot that scores would go to A1 unless A2 took a positive action to score the goal with a deflection.

Thank guys, I figured it would be a judgment call type of thing, but wanted to make sure...
