A1 drives to the goal and shoots. Goalkeeper B1 makes the save. As he attempts to throw an outlet pass, the ball falls out of his crosse and into the goal. When the ball enters the goal, A2 is closer to the goal than any other player. During the ensuing stick after the goal, it is discovered that (a) A1’s crosse has a deep pocket (b) A2’s crosse has a deep pocket.

Ok lets go off my gut since I am unable to pull up my rule book at the moment.
I think the scoring play is over when the goalie makes the save so we would not actually pull the attackers stick for a check. The defensive team would get the credit for the "Team Goal". I see it as two separate plays. So even if a coach requested a stick check, the goal would not be wiped out because technically the goalie scored and not the player? (or at least thats how it appears in the scoring section of the rulebook.) Think of it that the goalie is the shooter and the attacker gave the assist. On a stick check of someone who got an assist do we yank the goal on an illegal stick if the coach asks for one?
I'm still somewhat a newbie and going of my gut here so bare with me.
But I would want to give the goalie a hug. Those are the worst goals.

Since neither A1 nor A2 scored the goal (it is classified as a "team goal"), I'm not sure (if I were the ref) I would have checked the sticks. If I were the coach, I'd probably file a protest.
I'm actually half serious -- I understand that the officials can check any stick at any time for any reason, but considering the manner that this goal was scored, I'm not sure I'd have checked those sticks in this situation. Maybe I'd have saved them for the end of the next quarter as a "random" check.
Anyway, rules such as 4-9-j and 5-5 AR 7-9 clearly only apply to the player who scored the goal. This seems like the standard one-minute penalty applies with no particular reason to disallow the goal, and several reasons not to disallow it.

i'm with hymie on this. do you check sticks after a team goal?
NCAA gives slightly more info than does NFHS.
In NCAA, it is a good goal because it is a loose ball that has completely cleared the goal line, etc. Page 41. 4-8. Because it was a defensive player who scored, it is credited as a "team goal" on page 103. Neither A1 nor A2 scored the goal.
They may have their sticks checked any time, but in this case it would be a "random" check after this goal and even if their sticks were illegal, the goal would still stand.
NFHS says it's a good goal page 32 rule 4-8. But there is no mention that I can find about it being a "team goal" or an "own goal" (using soccer terminology). But it was the defensive goalie who scored the goal, not A1 or A2. Thus, if there is a random equipment check on A1 or A2 right after this goal, then the goal would stand even if their sticks were illegal.

What if Coach B asks for an equipment check on his own GK B1 and the stick is illegal? Does the goal come off the board? :chuckle:

Situation not covered by either rule book; however, I would nominate Coach B for Knucklehead of the Year Award.

Actually, it does:
Once the game has commenced, a head coach may
request the inspection of the equipment of any player on the opposing team.

BTW - didn't this happen in the NCAA play-offs this year? the team and player escapes me, but my heart went out the guy. I'm with Laxfan - those are the worst goals.

"Think of it that the goalie is the shooter and the attacker gave the assist. On a stick check of someone who got an assist do we yank the goal on an illegal stick if the coach asks for one?"
Simple answer is we allow the goal, neither A1 nor A2 scored the goal. But the point to make here is that in lacrosse there can only be one assist per goal unlike hockey where everyone who touched the puck in the past five minutes and the closest popcorn vendor get an assist.
