I tore my ACL and when I get back to playing I am going to be wearing a pretty extensive and intense looking knee brace. I was wondering if these knee braces were legal, or if the needed to be covered by a brace sleeve. I ask because my dad tore his and when he played basketball they made him cover his with a sleeve. So is it legal or not? preferably NCAA rules.
I have worn one since sophomore year in highschool, and never have had a problem.
The only thing I can find is:
No player shall wear or carry equipment that, in the opinion of the
officials, endangers that individual or other players.

Most of my experience with knee braces comes from football, and while Chas is right that there is no specific rule regarding knee braces, I would error on the side of safety. If all the hard surfaces of the brace were padded and/or a sleeve covered the brace so no fingers could get caught, I as a referee would have no problem with it.

Don't worry about it, I wore one for quite a while and not one official said anything to me. Besides, the brace is cumbersome as it is, the sleeve makes it more so.

My Dad said the same thing, the sleeve kills mobility even more than the brace already does. Thanks for all the replys guys, I really apreciate the help. Im hoping the fact that i play goalie and am hardly in contact with players will help my case of not covering the brace even more.

Where did they take the graft from? If it was from your patella make sure you protect the spot where they took the graft from at all cost as it will be the weakest part of the entire joint for quite a few years and, trust me when I tell you, you don't want to take a shot off of it. I was playing an attackman well outside of the box and he stepped back and ripped off an underhand shot that caught me square in the kneecap, right where they took the upper part of the graft from. If I could have run after him I would have ripped his head off.

commercially made braces are designed to be worn in most sporting events. Most surfaces are smooth, velcro closures, and virtually no angles to pose a safety hazard. Been wearing one for years. Been officiating HS and COC and have never encountered a problem and the part of any player.

Oh, jeez, wear what you want, and if it looks like a Mad Max costume, just throw on some sweats over it.
Big, baggy ones.
They help stops shots as well.
Good luck!

What model brace is it?
I dont know, I just started rehab so my Doc said not to worry about it for a couple of months. Honestly, Ive seen your custom one from Boscoe(sp?) and would love to have one done in custom colors to match my school(orange and purple). Plus theres seem to be some of the better constructed out of the companies I have researched, however, I have yet to do research on pricing/how much insurance will cover, which will play a major role in my decision.
Bledsoe Brace Systems. Hands down the best in the business. They can do anything you want, and the quality is unmatched. When it comes down to it, ask your doc. Its an awesome piece.

Are you talking about those braces linemen wear in football?

winny: yes he is
I wear one without a sleave and the ref's don't question me. If anything, they joke around with me about it. "don't kill anyone with your bionic-leg, ok?" was one of my favorite comments.

Sort of, this one is much more flexible.
Check it out, it is THE best brace. hands down.
