In a settled clear, if a D-pole hops into the crease and the goalie clears out wide, when the ball is passed to that D-pole inside the crease, does he get the same treatment as a goalie? i.e. 4 sec count, can't check his stick...

Agreed.. No...

He has 4 seconds but he is not protected from being checked. He is however protected from other players entering the crease, but then again this is for four seconds.

Section 4-18 states that the rules apply to the "designated goalkeeper".

From the NCAA book...a long pole would have a 4 secound count, but he can be checked, as stated above, as long as the attack does not touch the crease.

Page 51 letter c -

A defending player, including the goalkeeper, with the ball in his
possession, may not enter the goal-crease area, nor may he remain within
the goal-crease area in possession of the ball longer than four seconds.
