So I am looking into starting to use photoshop just to mess around with and to create cool pictures. I've seen a bunch of people here that make images like this, as well as edit images to insert cool things into them/remove things.

My first question is, which program would be ideal to use? It seems that CS3 is the top of the line program, but I really don't want to pay $650 just to start a new hobby. Are there other programs/old versions of it that I can get for cheaper? Or does everyone that uses it pay the money for the program?

Secondly, where can I learn some tricks/techniques about photoshop? I've found some forums and stuff, but any other places/books/resources would be appreciated.
thanks a lot.

get JASC Paint Shop Pro. It's pretty much the same as Photoshop, but it's easier and cheaper. i've used both, and PSP is my favorite by far.
