I was at a lax meeting the other day meeting our new coach, he asked "who is my returning goalie" I raised my hand and he asked to me stand up, then how tall I was I said 5'6" and then my weight, 125. Him and the assistant coach laughed. Two guys that had never seen me play.

I just want to say that size shouldn't matter, no matter what position. Any one else that is small and play a position better then a person thats like 5 inches taller then you and has a lot of a weight difference. It frustrates me how you get judged by your size.

we are the same size and wieght and i have never been judged by any coach. Goalies dont need to be giant fat kids its just how well you move and cover your goal. Also if you dont want to be judged be confident i may be small but i have a big presence and get more respect from that.

Well Skill will obviously determine how good you are and what level you play at, but there is a distinct advantage in your size/weight though it is less noticeable.

It's possible to be small and go far but its easier the bigger you are, Like Mikey Powell and mickey Jarboe aren't especially big but someone like Paul Rabil or Chris Hettler probably had an easier time making it to the higher echelons of the game. Also as a goalie size/weight is much less significant as generally goalie is not a very physical position (though it can be.)

thats pathetic that they laughed. or for that matter asked you to stand up.

a coach should look for a athletic goalie who is quick and fast with their hands. not some massive goalie you could see a lacrosse ball coming at them. though size does matter skill in my opinion out does size any day.

honestly think that is absolutely rude.

Dude Forget That! Thats Ridiculous!

Bro I hope you have like a .978 save percentage this year or something just because those coaches are complete garbage.

^^^and yeah UMBC's goalie is an EXCELLENT example. Hes a real small bro.

We're they laughing because they thought you were incompetent or just the fact that you're a small kid? There is a difference

sounds like good motivation to wreck on the opposition. make your coaches feel stupid for doubting you.

Wow, that's really rude. They laugh at you because of your size? I'm 4'8" 77lbs (7th grade)and I have had several coaches on other teams tell me I was one of the best goalies they had seen. IMO, size means nothing in the cage. You have to be quick, athletic, and fearless. Prove those jerks wrong man, show them what you're made of.

To all the vertically challenged goalies out there, Brett Queener (Albany)was 4'10" when he first played Varsity Lacrosse for his high school team. By the time he was a senior he had grown to about 5' 6" and continued to grow. The opposing teams would shoot high on him due to his diminutive size but that was a mistake. His sophomore year he was named the defensive MVP in the NYS tourney Class C and he was a whooping 5'2"...Keep playing, keep working and laugh at those who find fault with your size.

the starting goalie on my team is 5'0" and he is a really good goalie. he is quick as h*** with his movements and he stops about 3/4 of the shots at him maybe more i dont know. point is size dont matter. if you can play you can play.

Yeah, most of the good goalies that i played last year were actually pretty small. i think that being small in goalie is kinda good cuz you can be really quick. just prove him wrong and do awesome this season.

My little brother is a GK, 5th grade, 66 lbs, 4'5''! He has been in the cage for 3 yrs and has only lost 4 games. His PAL coach told him, you're too small as well. We left, and last week, he called asking if my brother wanted to come back... My father told him to take a hike!

Yeah, it's ridiculous that they'd laugh at you...goalie is by far the least size-dependent position, unless you're so short that you can't cover all of the goal, which I can't really see by high school.

Also, the story above me is ridiculous...a 5th grade coach did that? 5th grade lacrosse should be about learning fundamentals and having a good time, not kicking a kid off the team because you want to be competitive. And it sounds like your brother was competitive anyway, so it looks like that coach was just being a dick.

Hey man I know how you feel. Im a goalie, but even smaller. Most guys think being a good goalie is jsut about how big you are...BULL. Good goalies are fast and quick. Able to make fast decisions during the game. Hell, look at me. Im about 5,2 and one of the best goalies in the league. (7th, 8th).

Your coach take any meds?

Chuck Norris once tried to roundhouse kick the top right from the restraining line...

...Blevins stopped it, which altered the Earths rotation.

Ah yes another ignorant coach who knows nothing about goalie. Don't worry about your size, im 5'7 and im in HS. Im doing just fine, also since im smaller i notice alot more shots are up high on me which are easy to save, Since your lower its ezier to swallow up those bouncers to. Hang in there fellow netminder.

our goalie is about 5 feet tall and 90 pounds. He had three shutouts in a row

TrapDoor
03-22-2008, 11:29 PM
I'm 5' 1" and a seventh grader, only 90 pounds. But my save percentage thus far is .843 and I'm starting over an eighth grader who is probably 5' 6" or 5' 7". What's more, I'm probably trying out for a freshman Starz team this summer, and if I make the team I'll be even smaller in comparison to my teammates than I am right now. The point is, even if you are always the smallest guy on the team, you can have all the success in the world if you stick with it and give 100%.

Oh, and your coaches are total d-bags. What a lack of consideration towards their goalie's morale. It sucks that they laughed, but you just gotta shove it in their faces and become a stand-out goalie. And never let those words get in your way, or think of them as an excuse or the reason of poor performance. Size doesn't matter, and I'm sure you know it. So get out there and prove your coaches wrong.

Thought you guys would like this one as well, my brother's Pal coach called back and wanted to know if we had a spare goalie stick, he didn't want to spend the $$ on a new one, because his new goalie doesn't have any equipment... My father offfered to give him one of Jr.s broken heads, haha.
All hail small goalies!! They will become giants among men!

most goalies are big but that was still wrong of them to laugh, if you have a 6 feet goalie with bad hand eye coordination then if you shoot it down the middle they'll miss, whenever anyone underestimates you? prove them wrong, show them what you got, by the way you should talk to the athletic director about getting those coaches fired because obviously they have no idea what they are doing

Bro the smaller kids are better. better at running and stuff, and mostly quicker than the bigger guys. Don't let them get to you, just show them how good you are and i'm sure they'll be kicking themselves for even saying anything. I hate people like that.

my team once underestimated another team because they were all short and skinny-looking (even with pads on). Long story short: we got own'd. And then next game's pre-game speech:

"We already learned size doesn't mean ****."

Forget goalie, being bigger isn't going to help you in any position. Your new coaches will just have to learn.
