Guys,

My son is 9 and will turn 10 in the summer. He currently has a Cascade CS but, his noggin' just barely fits in to it. I found a CPX online for a good price and was wondering if this is too much helmet for him weight and size wise. Since it's a one size fits all shell adjusting the fit with pads, it has too be as big as possible meaning max. weight and size. I was looking at the CPROs but would like to get him something he could use for a while if I'm going to spend the $$$ since he's on the upper range of one of sizes. He also needs the protection as he loves to hit.

Does anyone have or know where I could some info on the weights of the different cascade models? I can't find anything online other than sizing based on head circumference.

One last stupid question, why does it seem that most players like the chrome cages over the black ones? Does it offer any advantages in vision when playing or is more of a preference thing?

Thanks for you time and help.

personally i think that helmets with chrome cages are lighter, but once on my head the weight isnt noticeable.

i'd look at the riddell helmet. my 2 little guys are in CSs as well, but when the time comes they will be getting riddells. they are the most protective and safest helmet on the market.

also, cascade will eventually be coming out with a youth version of their new helmet, the one with the 7 technology, but that wont be for at least another season

I am a player and the CPX would be a great helmet. it is very light and comfortable. plus its one size fits all. personally i don't really see a difference in the chrome cages and the regular black. The titanium is the lightest but a lot more expensive. the regular black will get the job done but the titanium is nice. especially for goalies.

I went through something similar last season. My son wanted a CPRO so I ordered one but he was close to the top end so wanting it to last more than one season, I went with the next size up. The problem was that it was too big and it didn't fit him, even with a few extra pads. In the end, he played with his old helmet until the end of the season. I personally would not take chances on poorly fitting equipment where his safety is an issue for the sake of a few $$.

The riddells are very protective, but also I believe them to be quite heavy, possibly a bit too heavy for a 10 year old!???

There is no point you picking bewteen a black or crome CPX they weigh roughly the same, the only noticable difference is with the TI, i have a black and a TI and the TI is quite a bit lighter, but again it does cost the $$.

CPros are ok, but the problem there is they are not one size fits all, so getting the wrong size could be an issue, however they are cheaper than the CPX. Again though they probably weigh as much as a black mask CPX if no slightly more.

I need to check into the riddells.

I called cascade and found out some interesting info. I didn't ask about the Pro7. I know it's only $20 more that the CPX ($210 vs. 190) but, I found an online store that has the CPXs/CPros on sale so that's probably where I get it from.

My original thought was that the CPro (in a smaller size) may actually be lighter than the CPX due to its "one size fit all" shell. What I found out is that Cascade uses the same size shell for all the Cpro and CLH2 size ranges. They just install different thicknesses of padding to accomodate the sizes the helmets comes in. The XS uses the same shell as the large in these two models.

To me, this means that the XS Cpro/CLH2 should weight more than a large to the extra thickness in the padding. Very interesting.

I was also told that the weight of each model goes down as you go up through the models. So, if you're worried about weight, pay the extra money and move up to a better model.

Now that the helmet issue is resolved, it's time to move onto new gloves and arm pads.

Thanks for all you help on this.

im pretty sure laxshopper.com has the weights for some of the helmets, but id prob just go with a triumph or cpx. depending on how much you want to spend on gloves, warrior hypnos are a solid choice or if you can spend a little more id prob go with brine kings or STX k18s. for arm pads, do you want more protection or mobility.

if you want more protection stick with ag(arm guards) no ap(arm protectors) because they are usu more rigid and harder. if your going on that route, again k18 ags are great or warrior mpg 4.5. if you want a little more flexibility i personally use and love brine supercrosse slip ons, also k18 ap.

hope this helps you out a little bit

Is the CS really that small? My brother is almost 9 and wants to play, and I was looking into the CS. Should he just go straight to a CPX?

DrewsDad, check out Arccloseouts.com. They have CPX's for like $150.
The Cascade's are susposed to be One-size fit, but they really end up fitting weird on people with small heads.

i doubt middle schoolers fit into a CS. i have seen 8 and 9 year olds who could barely fit into them. The best youth helmet is the PLH because of its resizing capability. it's the helmet that cascade ripped off its pro slide adjustment from and the 3 different sized ear pads that velcro in and out.

It all depends on the size/shape of the kid's head. Cascade says they are for kids up to 12 or 13 y.o. I got him the CS originally because the other models did not fit him properly. They fit size wise but slid around on his head. He didn't have that problem with the CS. He could probably squeeze the year out of the CS but I think it's time to upgrade since he has some gift cards that are buring a hole in his pocket.

Thanks for you time and help. its much easier to see out of a chrome face-mask. it is a pain to look out of a black face-mask.

Not true. The only difference is the color.

Got him the CPX. Dick's has them on sale for $152 and the shipping was only $7 for ground. They don't offer true custom colors but offer a lot of different color combos.
