okay, i am looking at buying a new snowboard. i have been snowboarding for 5 years but my parents say we dont go snowboarding enough to actually buy a board. i finally convinced them to let me buy a board but now i dont know which to get. i like to go on terrain parks and do tricks if that helps

Do you do stair rails?
How big are you?
What tricks can you do?
How much money do you have?

i recommend looking into either the rome agent or rome anthem. very good park/all mountain boards. i have the 08 rome agent and absolutely love it.
boards i've ridden:
Burton 7: i give it about a 7. it's got nice flex, but i didn't like the blunted tip.
Burton Custom: give it a 7. i would say it's an average board on steroids
Rome Anthem: 8. great flex, amazing for all-around mountain stuff.
Rome Agent: 9/10: incredible flex and pop. incredible in powder, on rails, and very balanced. easy to spin.
This weird K2 board: 6: i just didnt like how it handled at high speeds and on rails
Burton Air: 6: too wide for me, bad on rails, but incredible in the powder
Ride Kink: 7: very flexy, bad in powder, but if your a park bum, this is the board for you.
Ride DH: 8: very nice, but i didn't like how i felt like it was too nice of a board. like when you drive a really nice car. it's fun but you're always worried to damage it.
overall my favorite is the rome agent.

are you only going to be in the park or do you like free riding as well?

I have become a solid advocate of Atomic Boards. I am a freerider but my park rat friends, 2 ride atomic. They love them.
You probably are in the mid-high 140 range for a board I would say. The Rome line is all very nice. I like their stuff. It is quality. Make sure you spend a good chunk of change on your boots and bindings though. They are more important in my opinion.

Do you want a new snowboard, or do you want your own snowboard? If you don't go boarding often, then it might make sense for you to buy a secondhand board rather than a new one. This is especially true if you are still growing. Where do you go - Massanutten? Whitetail? Check the bulletin boards at the rental shops there to see if there are any used boards for sale. Also, try Fairfax Surf Shop, Craigslist, and The Bike Stop (http://www.rideva.com/), the bicycle, skateboard, and snowboard shop in Culpeper.

You probably go up I-81 to I-270 outside Hagerstown, so you don't go by Frederick. There used to be a place right as you got off I-270 at Clear Spring, before you crossed the main street, that rented equipment. Are they still there?
I imagine a lot of kids at Mercersburg Academy have boards to sell and swap.
I was looking for the name of the board shop in Frederick, and I see there are two; Pitcrew Skateboards & Snowboards (http://pitcrewskateboards.com/), and Under the Sun Sports (http://utssports.com/).
Have you tried the ski/snowboard equipment store in Leesburg, Pro-Fit Ski & Skate (http://www.ski-skate.com/), to see if they have anything on their bulletin board or as a used rental?
Harrisonburg has Function4Sports (http://www.function4sports.com), formerly Ski & Skate.
There's a ski/snowboard equipment store in Oakton, Alpine Ski Shop (http://www.alpineskishop.com/). They have another store in Sterling, too.
There used to be a board shop in Chantilly. I know Ski Chalet (http://www.skichalet.com/) has a store in Chantilly, but this was skateboards, surfboards, and snowboards exclusively. East Coast Board Shop was their name, and I heard they moved to Fairfax. I haven't tried to find them. Oh, it's still there: Eastcoast BoardCo (http://ecboardco.com/). I once bought a board advertised on their bullein board. I haven't seen those guys in years.
Finally, here's the link for Fairfax Surf Shop (http://www.fairfaxsurfshop.com/).
If you go up to Fairfax, you might want to stop at George Mason University (http://www.gmu.edu/operations/facilities.htm) to see if there are any boards advertised on the bulletin board at the student union. Also grab a copy of the GMU newspaper, Broadside (http://www.broadsideonline.com/), to see if anything is advertised in it.

about a month or two ago was the prime time for board shopping
sounds like you want kinda like a developing park board, since your 5'1 i assume you don't have size 12 boots or higher, so if your willing to drop some cash, i would suggest the ride dh 151, it will seem too big till you grow a good 4 inches but since you dont go that much its better to buy something you will grow into. also the rome agent is good gets pretty flexy once it looses its pop. It does have that kinda too nice feel to it as stated above but that dissapears after a good day at a crowded park... nothing annoys me more then snakes hitting my BRAND NEW BOARD and scratching it... but really at your level you probably wont notice significant differences in boards, i.e pop, flex etc. if your local shop doesn't have one just get something you can afford. my first was like a Burton light speed or something to that generic effect. if you intend to stick with it though stay away from Burton... they make ONE good park board and its seriously overpriced (its the dominant) Not to be a stereotypical Burton hater but their designers obviously have no perception of the word flex

go for a capita stairmaster with some tight flux bindings. can't go wrong with that. and it won't break the bank. probably end around $700 or so.

the rome artifact is a great park board, it has a -3/-3 degree bevel to prevent rail hangups. Maybe try the skate banana buy libtech, too.

sorry the artifact is a great jib board (rails walls etc.)
it's a horrible park board. Folds up on any landings bigger than 20 feet. Also you really have to fight it in pow, and even on just groomer runs it doesn't handle speed very well. I haven't tried the skate banana but i assume its a little better because of the reverse chamber but still its a jib board.
