well this year it looks like its gunna be the St. Andrews-Pine Crest rivalry again. St. Thomas is good but this is only their second year with a team. I think Andrews is gunna pull it off this year. Anyone disagree?

saying that St. Andrews wont be in it is like saying the Patriots wont make the playoffs. every year they are stacked enough to take the state title. it's probably a tad to early in the season to really tell what everyone has. but obviously for states your gonna have to think st. andrews is going to be in there

We played St Andrews last weekend. They're sick
(We lost 20-5)

we (pope john paul 2) lost to them 17-3. they are DEF a solid team...every kid on the team has a laser shot. and Wee-Man (#2) is there smallest player and their greatest attack threat. im Funsize (#13) for Pope soo its a small man battle here in south florida.

OK Let's talk St. Andrew's. I saw them DISMANTLE a fairly good Lake Brantley team yesterday. I have seen SA before but yesterday it looked like a decent DIII playing a high school in terms of the size and speed of the kids. How much of St. Andrew's talent is truely home grown and how much is a roll out of Goldberg's Florida Select activities and "scholarship" athletes?

Saint Andrews will win state this year and Winter Park will come in second. It happens almost every year and it will happen again this year.

On a side note, there is a possum goalie for the U17 who is in 8th Grade. Anyone know where he's going to high school?

If Bishop Moore were to pick him up, they might have a shot at states in the next 2-3 years.

this discussion has gone on forever about goldbergs "recruiting" and such. but the truth is that with the tremendous middle school program they have at SA they build these kids from like 4th grade with the right fundamentals. also its not so much recruiting as it is kids showing up at your doorstep. i can think of 3 starters for SA just off the top of my head (i think there is more) that are transfers. but that doesnt mean they were recruited. when you win consistently kids are going to want to play for you. kids also know that goldberg has connections and is your best bet in florida for playing at the next level.

and ya, the only way anyone in FL is beating SA this year is in a fluke game or SA plain doesnt show up.

by the way, my team (STA) beat pine crest the other night 16-9. whoop whoop. also can anyone tell me anything about gulliver this year? i know they have some pretty quick middies but other then that what?

Has Saint Andrew's ever gone for the national title?

I know last year they beat some serious MD team, so I'd imagine they could contend with the other teams that are there.

Could they beat Islip?

AquinasLAX

last year they beat Mcdonogh and lost by i think 3 to Boys Latin. although this is very very impressive....you have to keep in mind that SA is in the middle of their schedule and clicking on all cylinders while BL and Mcdonogh have had at max 2-5 practices prior to that game. Would be interesting to see SA play them at the end of BL's season. all that being said SA is currently ranked 24th in the nation by insidelacrosse.com. and are a very good team that could def. compete with the northern elite teams

Ragarding the 8th grade goalie, he goes to Markham Woods Middle meaning that he is zoned for my school, Seminole in Central Florida; however, if his parents want him to go anywhere through lacrosse, it's not going to be on my team. I graduate this year so it matters less to me BUT he is zoned for Seminole after all and it would be good to see my high school win more than 2 games a year. I could see Lake Mary pulling something and having him go there.

SA could always pick him up...

As far as SA in the national title, I've been to a Goldberg camp and he knows everything. He knows the best set ups for every situation. He knows how to combat everything and he knows how to beat every team. I sincerely believe that he could win a title.

On another side note, on the Duke roster, there is a player whose last name is Goldberg.... relation?? The Duke player apparently went to Gulliver, so I don't think it's his son, but who knows.... anyone?? any thoughts??

Funsize
02-25-2008, 07:57 AM
its not related. he has one son and hes like 6 years old, whos gunna be the next big thing, he cradles better than most 7th gradeers and hes 6! i know goldberg because i play varsity for Pope John Paul II highschool and ive been goin to his camps since i was in 6th grade. his team is ALWAYS stacked because the kids at SA learn how to play lacrosse in PE in 4th and 3rd grade, because goldberg is the PE coach for the elementary school. he finds his next batch of ballers when their young.

It still doesn't explain the size SA has this year...that's quite a number of kids with prototype size for a co-ed day school of 1200, K-12.

All those kids on SA have been bred to play lacrosse.
What sucks is what happens when they don't get scouted to play?
Do they still go to college? I know some people that all they have is lacrosse and if they don't get scouted, college probably won't happen.

st. andrews is one of the elite acadmic schools in south florida. it is not like if they dont go to college for lax then the 4 years they were at SA was wasted and they are never going to go to college. they still will graduate with a diploma from SA and as long as they dont have like a 1.2 gpa (you have to have 2.0 to play sports) they are going to get into college. somewhere. i'd be willin go bet that 99.9999% of all SA lax players over the last 3-5 years have gone onto college be it lax or not

watching SA dominate Gulliver was bringing back memories. SA is going to have a tough time finding serious competition on their way to the state tourney.

With the growth of lacrosse in this State (recent article in Sun-Sentinel on youth programs) and club teams moving to Varsity (Saint Thomas) it will only be a matter of a few years before there is competition for Saint Andrews, but right now they are the class of the State and have been for some time and their only competition is from the out of state games they play. It is truly a model program (any sport) and they have set the bar incredibly high.

Competition is growing, here in 3-4 years their Dynasty will be proceeded by another...

TheLaxLife

SA is about 4 years ahead of the next best team WP at this point. The next best varsity programs are at least 6-8 years away. It will take that long for those areas that already have good youth feeder programs turn out enough quality players to start to mount a challenege to their program.

In addition SA is the most innovative program in the state and is getting better faster than the other schools are at this time.

The biggest required element is challenging them is on the coaching front, and there are only 3 coaches currently in Florida (Timber Creek, Vero Beach and Nease) that have the necessary background and skills to compete with Coach Goldberg on a level playing field.

SA now competes for national recognition and the state championships are by products of those efforts. On the plus side, they serve as a great model and target for other Florida schools to aspire to, and they bring some welcome focus to the developing quality of lacrosse in the state. Just don't expect much to change over the next 8-10 years unless Coach Goldberg leaves their program.

I think that Pine Crest has a chance at going all the way against saint Andrews this year

I don't know why you guys even bother on predictions.....Let SA play the MD and other NE schools. I say bring on your next best 8 teams and setup a "battle of the borders" tourney with GA top 8. We'll throw out our Lovett to even it up.

i think that Florida would beat Georgia in lacrosse in most of the games though.

I feel Ga's #2,3,4,5 teams would give yours a pretty good match. Why don't you bring yourselves up here a spring break.

I think that most teams should, just becuase we play teams from Maryland, Virginia, and Pennslyvania, and they come down here to play. I think we should go up to Georgia next year

Florida would beat Georgia in my opinion, should make some kind of tourney, or games between ours and your best. Saint Andrews would beat any Georgia team, and Winter Park, Lake Brantley, Lake Highland, Gulliver, Winter Springs, Matanzas, and Nease I think would have a large winning percentage against Georgia's top teams.

I believe the best Ga schools (Lov., Lass. Alpha. Pope, this yr.) could possibly hold their own against everyone except St. Andrews. Does anyone know the background of their coach Goldberg?
