I am a highschool student. I am going to spend some time at my town's local boy's and girl's club teaching young boys how to play lacrosse. This my first time teaching lacrosse. Mind you, I am only teaching the basics. However, I really don't know where to start. I am not starting a team or anything, and it is only for a two weeks or something like that. I know how to play the sport, but when I think about it now, I really can't think of how to teach it. Does anyone have any pointers on how to teach little children who are like 10-14 years old how to play the sport?

Three things to emphasize with beginners: Catch, Throw, Craddle. After that, protect the stick. Beginners of all ages do really wheels off stuff in these areas. Throw straight over the top, receive with top hand at the throat and a craddle that isn't some wild gyration.

throw wrenches at them. if you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a defender

go with basic's to start, catching, cradling, passing, shooting. when doing shooting, remind the kids that its not the same as passing, dropping the top hand lower creates faster shot speeds. teach the form, not what looks cool. you are going to have kids who are already going to be able to do alot of the basic stuff. once you have a general idea of what skill level your dealing with, add man-ball drills, stick protection, field vision, footwork, etc. If you look at college warm-ups before games, alot of the stuff they do is all the same as almost every youth/club/high school team does.

Go to the US Lacrosse website (http://www.uslacrosse.org/cep/index.phtml) and take their coaching clinics/classes.

it's always good to teach proper form when picking up the ball before anything else. beginners will be picking up the ball constantly while learning to throw and catch, and if you let them get in the habit of raking and scooping with one hand, it'll be really hard to undo later.
