I have heard that UNC is running a new type of zone defense. Has anyone seen it and if so can you explain it to me. I saw what Quint Kessenich wrote about it in IL this month. It looks like it can be really effective for a high school team.
UNC often runs a 3-3 zone where they pressure/funnel the ball to a slide at the edge of the "boxes" within the zone. It can be effective if you've got good communicating d-poles, but any delay on the slides leaves people open in god shooting position. They mix up their zone with normal MTM and are not always as aggresive on the slides. It's really not a new defense and I've seen several talks on it at the USL convention in years past.
That being said, you have to have the basics of individual defense dwon before you throw in a zone.
