it occasionally happens, but thats when i usually miss it. i really try to avoid it; i lik really open my eyes wide before they shoot, it helps me plus freaks them out

Also blinking is natural, the more you take shots the less you will.

Sometimes during 1 on 1s when the attackman is like within 8 yards and rips it, I blink, and I miss. I'm getting better about it though. One thing you can do is lay down with your helmet on and have someone drop/throw a ball at your facemask, and try to keep your eyes open every time.

Forget the tape - use a staple gun and pray your tear ducts are working well because your eyes will dry out otherwise.:bawling:

the way my coach had me get over blinking (flinching) was he had me drop my stick and block the shots with my body. the he came in and me and him were about 5 yrds out and he shot the ball at my facemask... been over both ever since.

Heres a good drill:
1. Lay on your back
2. Have someone stand over you with a ball in their hand
3. with your helmet on, have them drop it on your face mask
4. try to keep your eyes open... its hard at first but u get used to it
5. repeat about 30 times-- do it daily

i think it depends on how bad you want it. flinching was a major issue for me for all three years of my lacrosse career, but this year i never blink.. because i really want that spot. also, taking in what a goalie is by definition.. and what his job is.. you know after a while that you simply cant afford to blink. also, it's all about mindset. get angry..

I dont blink or flinch durring games but in practice if im hugging a pipe and the guy is winding up on me from 8 yards out i do. I get really pissed aftwerwards though, i hate flinching

Yeah, in practice I'm a little more tentative in cage. But when that whistle blows and the adrenaline starts pumping it feels like I never blink when the ball's on my end.

Practice just doesn't get me pumped up like a game. I always get more injuries during practice and my stupid attack men shoot as hard as they can from 7 yards and break my shins in half.
but I always say "hit the net b*tches, not the goalie."
...its good team advice

a good drill to overcome blinking (and help concentration in general) is to get a couple of balls and put a strip of (different-colored) tape around the middle of the ball and have your coach shoot them at you firmly enough that it's realistic, but easy enough that you'll pretty much always make the save. as your coach shoots, concentrate REALLY hard on how the ball is spinning as it comes towards you, watching the strip of tape all the way from his pocket to yours, and be able to recreate the way it spun in your mind after every shot.
the better you learn to see the ball, the more likely you are to get a stick on it, which means you won't be in as much danger of getting hit with the ball. ergo, you won't blink instinctively on shots.
