Yes, I did search for clarification.
I don't really understand the whole point of a slide, I don't think. From what I'm hearing, you call it when a defender gets beat and then the next one is supposed to pick up that attacker. But thats probably wrong. Can someone please explain?

That is basically right, when you see that your defender is going to get beat you call out SLIDE. Do not wait until he is already beat though because that slide will most likely come late. Now when the defender you asked to slide slides there must be a fill on the man he left or it could result in a simple draw and dump. That is why it is always important to call out who's hot and who has the 2 or the fill.
Make sense?

or when its fastbreak and point dpole goes to pick up the middie coming in, and he leaves his attack, then he or u would call a slide so the other dpoles will slide to cover the man open.

Yeah, my school, it's the guy whose hot's responsibility to call it when he goes. If he's not, I'll call it.

Many teams also run an "early" slide. As soon as someone starts to dodge, call "SLIDE". No chance of getting beaten. Forces the man with the ball to rethink the situation and try to find the open man. Can be very effective. Especially if your opponents are great dodgers but not great thinkers.

but then if they are great dodgers, thinkers, and feeders then you better make sure you got the 2nd slide down pat.

It depends on when your coach wants the "hot man" to slide. Usually, I call for slide when the man has a step or two on the defenseman.
There's two times a defense should slide. When you want to, and when you have to. When you are beat topside, then you HAVE to slide. When the man playing the man at X forces him near the crease at GLE, that's when you want to slide, and totally wreck him.
