What helmet do you have?
There aren't any real significant advantages between throat guards besides maybe clear vs. solid color, or mobility. It's just a matter of getting one that is made for your helmet.

Buy the throat gaurd for your brand of helmet.

Get a hockey one, they're way cheaper and I feel that it doesn't get in the way as much. Plus it looks cooler

Hockey ones are good.
My favorite is the clear cascade one

Not unless you like getting smashed in the throat. That particular model only provides bare minimum coverage of your neck. It is only about four or five inches wide whereas the clear Cascade one goes from one side of your helmet to the other.

i heard the black cascade ones break less than the clear cascade or the clear brine ones.
you can feel that the clear throat guards are stiffer than the black cascade if you flex them in your hands

It's true that the black ones don't break as easy as the clear ones. I broke two clears before a black broke on me.

In my third season using the Cascade clear one and haven't broken it yet. But I used a hanging one similar to the one in post #6 for years in the 80's and 90's and it worked just fine. Never got hit in the throat.
