There are some good resources. They both have good info, but try searching next time.

It doesn't have to be boiling, it doesn't even have to be hot. But the hotter it is, the faster it works, because the dye molecules have more energy, and the plastic is more viscous. You could probably dye a head by leaving it in room temp dye for a month, but you could get the same effect by using hot dye and putting the head in anywhere from 20-40 minutes. Essentially, regardless of temp, the dye molecules make their way into the plastic, embedding themselves in between/around the plastic molecules. The dye then reflects out a certain frequency(s) of light, making the color you see. The reason dyes fade is because after a while, the energy from the light breaks down the dye molecules, and they stop reflecting.

Boiling RIT dye isn't the only dye that works. Any fabric/plastic dye would work, but RIT is a good product, and is used and advertised widely.

Any other questions?

sabreace is right. when you heat the water and create a bath for the head the molecules in the plastic are positively charged and begin to move rapidly. a way to make super dark colors are to presoak the head in hot water before the bath.
