with the communication job that comes with playing goal...how exactly do you determine what player is hot and when to slide?

it is usually determined by how your coach has his slide packages. I do form adj when behind and from crease when up top. Also your d men should know so when you say whose hot they should say if they are.

The hot man is the defensemen that is the first slide.

Depends on the slide package and the offensive set. In club ball, we do the following:
- When the offense has no one on the crease (i.e. circle or open set) we slide from left and right (also called "adjacents.") In other words, if the defender gets beat to the left, his man from the left slides to the attacker, and then the next guy to the left fills in the 2nd slide. If he gets beat to the right, the guy on the right picks him up.
- When the offense has at least one player on the crease, the first slide comes from the defender in the crease area, from whichever side is closer to the ball. If the attacker dodges left, then the crease defender on the left side makes the first slide. The next farthest defender from the ball fills in the second slide.
When you call the slide is dependent on a number of things, like how good a dodger and shooter the offensive player is, how quick your guys are, how well they can defend 1-1, how well they backfill the 2nd slide, etc.

This definitely needs to be quoted. Could not have summed it up any better.
This is what the majority of teams do.
