View Full Version : Custom Glove Protection

I broke my hand (dominant) at tryouts today (4th and 5th metacarpal/handbone). I was just taking some shots afterwards from the captains and a few others. It was about an 80 mile per hour shot from a pretty small angle off to the left and it hit me about right center of my top hand glove, right over the metacarpals that broke. I'm out at least a month and right at the beginning of the season too.
I am really small for my age, about 5' 3" 100lbs and get pretty beat up. I want to prevent this from happening in the future and am contemplating how to beef up the protection around my hand. I have superfreaks and was thinking of lacing a plate of hard plastic and foam through the vent holes on the top of the glove. I've seen Gvozden with some sort of plate riveted to his glove.

I'm thinking of doing something similar and am wondering if you guys have any advice or suggestions?

Im thinking of doing the same thing with my superfreaks. I am just gona slice up some old gloves and fit some padding on the topp of my gloves.

I'm actually 15 but as I said I'm really small for my age. But I'm supposed to be over 6 feet so its all good.
I'm wondering if anybody has done or seen any tougher protection than cutting up old gloves.

i took metal strips, and covered both sides of the metal with foam. i covered both sides of my thumb so i wont break it again where i did (at the joint on the hand, not the thumb).
maybe you could try something like that and put it where you got hit...

Pvc pipe = Poop. Yea its a hard surface to protect ur thumb, but it does not cushion the impact, which will cause your thumb to jam or dislocate.

thats why i padded metal with the foam, to protect against impact. and ridgegoalie which team will you be playing on?

what im wearing under my glove for protection
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff162/laxfreak8888/Photo1108.jpg
not needed but i like these gloves
to anybody who did not read the above messages, these pads are foam covered metal strips with tape to keep them together. then they are taped onto the glove and this works really well and i suggest it to every goalie. you can do this to any glove as long as you have foam, metal strips, and tape.

As you can see in the origianl pic it is in the middle of his glove and by taping it there you would lose movment how do u get it to stay there without tapeeeeeeeeee

Ryan I believe the JHU goalie riveted the plate into his glove but unless you have the tools and a glove that works I don't know how else to do it. I am drilling holes in the plate I'm attaching and stringing it to the gloves through the vent holes on top of the glove (superfreaks). Unless you have a glove that will work for this I don't know any other method besides taping.

ridge- i am starting jv rite now, with a possibility of playing varsity. and im pretty sure that we scrimmage as well. hope i see u out there.
ryan- you dont lose mobility with what i did i maintain slight movement in my thumb, and because i broke my thumb im keeping it stable right now, and as a goalie you dont really need to move your thumb too much.
sjrlax- these gloves are very protective. the top of the hand is very solid. the fingers have some padding, however a direct hit to the side of a finger might hurt a little. it will take 30-45 minutes to break in the thumb, just pass the ball around and it will break in. overall these gloves are very high quality and i recommend them.

No, I'm not allowed to or else I'd risk screwing it up even more and having to get surgery and pins. Even if I could the splint I'm in has plaster on the right side of the hand where the break is and encloses my outside 3 fingers and has them plastered at a right angle with my hand to keep my tendons stretched out. Obviously, it would be impossible to get into my glove.

now if your injury wasnt so serious, you can do what i did and go to the doctor with your glove and tell him to cut your cast so that you can fit it in the glove. but because of your injury, i would say just let it heal so you will not need surgery

That's funny becuase this kid on my team broke his arm in soccer (dont ask) and he wore one really big glove that was his dads!
