Have seen references to this game all over the place, but it definitely belongs here. Am watching a couple of rugrats -- uh, kids -- fighting over the peanut butter and thinking this is how it'll be at Klockner Stadium today. We're heading out in about an hour -- we drew straws and I lost again.

Just shooting from the hip, but I think the nervousness of some Hopkins fans is premature. Anyone who saw the Princeton and Syracuse games should feel the Blue Jays have the weapons to compete with the 'Hoos. Virginia is loaded on offense -- Billings, Glading, Carroll and Rubeor come to mind. But a lot of teams have put up big numbers on the Cavaliers' defense -- Princeton scored 10; Towson, Syracuse and Stony Brook netted 13 apiece. Maybe Rabil hasn't played up to everyone's expectations, but Hopkins has scorers and spreads it around, the Jays have a pretty solid defense, and just like last year, the roster is full of players eager to make their mark on this proud program.

The Dom Starsia vs. Dave Pietramala match-up is driving me to the Blue Ridge, it's always an epic coaches duel. The goalie battle will also be fun to watch. Ghitelman vs. Gvozden ... flip a coin and it'll probably land on its edge. I expect Hopkins to counter the Cavaliers' offensive threats with strong fundamental play, a Hopkins trademark. I picked Virginia in the "games poll" thread, but I wouldn't be surprised if the ultimate hero today is someone no one has even mentioned yet.

Virginia 14-13

the jays are all wound up because their last win in c-ville was 10 years ago, and i think the one before that was another 10 years back.
that said, its shaping up to be one of the best games of the day.

wowwwww 3 straight L's for Hopkins. they are digging themsleve a hole and they better start climbing our fast. even with Duke losing one, i HIGHLY doubt they will go on the drought that Hop is on right now. im not a Hopkins fan AT ALL but i still hope to see them do at least moderately okay this season

I think Hopkins' rank is going up this week regardless. Virginia is clearly stealing the #1, SYracuse #2, Hopkins #3 and I think Duke is dropping to #4 or maybe even lower considering how badly they lost to G-town. OT losses against two top 5 teams for Hopkins is not going to hurt them that much. That is why they are top 5 teams (though the loss to Hofstra was inexcusable). I think one has to remember last year- Hopkins started off 4-4 and then went on to win the national title. Anything can happen at this point for any team. But this loss will not even come close to tarnishing Hopkins' playoff chances. They are pretty much guarenteed a spot every year because of their ridiculous schedule.

In the end, this game definitely lived up to its billing. And for the third straight week, Johns Hopkins played in one of the most thrilling games of the season. That's beginning to sound like a cliche, but it's also true. Klockner Stadium was electric, packed to standing room only, and as raucous as I've ever seen it. But when Brian Carroll took a feed from Shamel Bratton and burned the net with 7 seconds left in overtime I sensed relief as much as jubilation. At least on the part of the Wahoos and their fans.

It was that kind of game. In the last eight minutes of regulation, No. 2 Virginia took a one-goal lead, Hopkins battled back on goals by Brian Christopher and Paul Rabil to pull ahead. Garrett Billings then tied it up, sending the throng into a frenzy, but Rabil soon found Tom Duerr open for the Jays' second lead in about five minutes with the clock winding down. Ben Rubeor scored with about a minute left to pull Virginia even, and the Cavaliers won the ensuing face-off. Rubeor fired a potential game-winner with seconds left on the clock that clanged the pipe … overtime.

Hopkins took the face-off to start the sudden victory period, and had two scoring opportunities before the Cavaliers’ final game-clinching possession. I counted two turnovers for each team before Virginia somehow backed up Hopkins' second shot to preserve its chances to claim the win.

There were plenty of heroes in this game, but one stands far above the others. Hopkins sophomore goalie Michael Gvozden had 17 saves, and it seemed like many of those shots were lasers from mid- to close range. He had six ground balls and a caused turnover, but his presence seemed greater than his stats. I've called his name a few times already this season, but this was his most thrilling performance yet. Rabil (3g/1a) on offense and Matt Bocklet on defense (8 gb/4 caused turnovers) led an inspired Blue Jay effort that seemed to take control in the fourth quarter after an intense, fast-paced three-period prelude marked by ties and lead changes throughout.

Ben Rubeor and freshman midfielder Shamel Bratton each scored three goals for Virginia, and Billings and Rhamel Bratton each had two; but standout props go to Brian McDermott at the face-off X, Ken Clausen on D and the entire Cavalier midfield. They ran in overdrive all game long. I was waiting for, and expecting, them to pull away … but it never happened.

Hopkins has now lost three overtime games in a row; and two of those are against the teams likely to be ranked No. 1 and No. 2 next week. At the risk of invoking another cliche, Hopkins appears on track to reach Foxboro for Memorial Day weekend.

So does Virginia.

I really don't see Hopkins being ranked that high, and Duke dropping that much. Duke has lost once to a Top Ten team. Hopkins has lost three times successively to two Top Ten teams and one unranked team. Granted all three of Jay's losses were in OT, but, still, a loss is a loss. Yes, Duke lost by a fair margin to G-town, however everyone is aware of what they are capable of. Duke is 8-1. Hopkins is 3-3. In my opinion, I don't think the Blue Jays will be ranked higher than the Blue Devils.

Did Glading play? It's going to be Virginia 1 Syracuse 2 and Duke 3. I think Duke should be 2 though.

Danny Glading posted 4 assists.

true, but they play the toughest sched in the nation, and have lost all overtime games...there 3 goals from being undefeated. I personally thought the ref blew a call in ot whn peyser shot, and missed and the hopkins player was already behind the net, and then the ref called it UVA ball.

Go Virginia!
As always Klockner Stadium was packed for the Hopkins vs. Virginia game. Just as it was back when I was there in 2005. Anyone know the final attending number? I heard it was expected to be around 8,000.

On the other hand... Lets review.
Game of the Week: Hopkins @ Virginia. This is going to be a down to 4th quarter deciding game. With Hopkins coming off two game losing streak it's do or die time. Will the Hopkins everyone knows as this mighty powerhouse team return? Or will #2 ranked Virginia keep using their powerhouse line-up to put up major points. Personally, I don't think this is Hopkins' week. They will suffer a third lose in Charlottesville and Virginia moves to 9-0. I expect both of these teams to make it to the NCAA Semi-Finals but if Hopkins doesn't improve expect Syracuse to take their place.

I believe that this was one of the best games of the season so far. A classic match up between Hopkins and Virginia. Both teams played to their hearts out. And just a personal thought is that Virginia has a pretty damn good overall threat from everyone on the field. They still need to work on their defense which was better than their Towson game but still needs work. And I still stand by what I said. Virginia and Hopkins will both make runs into the NCAA semi-finals.

Pretty sure you're right, HoosUrDaddy ... it was a Klockner Stadium record crowd, over 7,500, but I'm thinking it had to be more. Been there many times and have never experineced anything like it. A classic game ... and both of these teams have seen their share of those this season already.

i'm a 4th year student at uva, and i've never seen it like that for a lacrosse game. such an awesome atmosphere, with the band and a lot of students. the number of 7500+ must be a little short, maybe because us students only have to show our student ID's. the attendants have no way to keep track of how many students, except counting in their head. but regardless... awesome win for the hoos, and hopefully we can recreate that atmosphere when we host duke on april 12th
