I realize most of you on the forums are too young to give me any advice but to the older guys I need some help. I am a recent college graduate and through connections I got a pretty good job out of school with Motor Vehicle Services in New Jersey. The first 3 months were fine but it's got to the point of insanity. Everyone is backstabbing each other, were taking a pay decrease and the past 5 months everyone just dumps their work on my desk and takes the credit. I am now taking night classes to get my masters degree and I am thinking about leaving my job going to a temp agency and playing my cards from there. I am under my mothers health care for another 3 years so not having it wont be a problem. Oh yeah, and everyday there is rumors of layoffs. What do you guys think?

Im not very experienced in the major life decisions department, but I do have a suggestion. Actually a question. Have you asked your family? I think that they might have some of the best ideas seeing as how they understand you and your situation more fully. So give it some thought.

Sounds like a dump. I believe that if you aren't happy working there, you shouldn't be working there. It's one thing if you work a bum job at 16 because your parents said you had to pay for car insurance. When you are talking about a career, you need something you won't mind doing for a long time.

I took your advice Sparticus and talked to my mom. To my surprise she actually agreed with me. And yeah the place is a dump. I though I would power through until grad school was over and have a good resume but there is no way I am going to make it that long.

I can think that one pro that does work in favor of you doing this now rather than down the road is that you are still covered under your mother's health insurance, something that would be a real killer to do without if you were striking out on your own and dependent on your own coverage from you current job. Having that does give you some breathing room depending on where you end up next should you decide to leave your current job.

it was like that at a firm i used to work for....just sit in your cubicle and do your work and dont let the rumors and gossip get to you then when you get home search for new jobs.

Go, read the book Going Postal by Mark Ames. It will give you reasons for your current situation, and why you need to leave. It is a little biased maybe even crazy at some points, but I think it will help you make your situation.

As royce said, the health insurance is a big thing. I know every teacher I have this year has stated that health insurance after college is the hardest thing to keep, but often it is necessary. You may never get the chance to quit after this point, and if you hate your job now, wait till you're there for another 10 years.

I say go for it. You only live on this place for a limited time, do something you want to do.
