string it as deep as you can while still being able to throw with it. for most goalies this is about 1.5 to 2 balls deep.

do you count it from the bottom of the pocket to the top of the plastic or the bottom part of the plastic head

the bottom part. the lowest side wall aka the one with stringing holes.

It's usually important to have a stick that is deep enough to eliminate rebounds, but not so deep so that you can throw with it. It's going to have to be your experience to find that gray area so that you can do both, because saving shots and clearing are equally important.

my goalie coach uses a pocket that is barely one ball deep each pocket has its advantages.
Deep
Fewer Rebounds
greater control
Shallow
Further Distance
Better accuracy
Every goalie has his preference if you are able to control your rebounds and want to be able to clear further. However with a deeper pocket your distance is cut down but you have fewer rebound and better control

I see that a deep pocket cures my rebound problem. But I have limited time to form a great pocket. My club provided me with a brand new, hard mesh STX Goalmaster Men's Lacrosse Goalie Stick for my 7th/8th grade rec team. I was told to soften the mesh by soaking it in a warm water/hair conditioner solution and then form a pocket. I did this and placed a ten pound shot-put in the head to form some sort of pocket. When it dried, I ended up with a decent sized (About 25% the size of the one you see a high-level goalies have) pocket and it throws pretty well. My problem is that is has a VERY strong rebound when he tries to catch. I do have him "give" when he catches but every ball bounces out or up. To compound the problem, he never played lacrosse or goalie before so I don't want him to get discouraged by all the potential shots/goals that will occur when the ball rebounds to the shooter so near to the crease. Our first game is Saturday so I need to fix this ASAP.

you can try soaking and shampooing it again, but stock stx mesh is horrible and not worth the trouble. I would suggest restringing it with some bigger diamond mesh.

mines about 2.75 balls deep and it throws perfectly. but its not just the depth of the pocket, every part of the stick can affect throwing the ball well

I'm sure how deep mine is exactly but probably about 3 balls. I played with it until I found my "sweetspot" and now I can throw like a god with it.
