I'm angry with the recent happenings at UMD.
**I took this out because my next post how sums up how I feel about it better** I still feel that you should have enogh self reserve to not drink. There are no ifs and buts about it. The fact that drinking is a part of college life is true and its not bad to be drinking but in this case I feel it is because they are student athletes and have promised not to drink.
If you dont know what I'm talking about, this is in reference to numerous members of the men's and women's lax teams at UMD being suspended from fall play as a result of drinking at an off campus party. One of the freshman at the party got sick from the amount of alcohol she consumed.

Being a college student and a lacrosse player, I can tell you that the lacrosse teams at UMD are doing what every other college lax team in the nation does (and most college students for that matter). They party and drink. SumSum, when you get to college you will understand. I'm not saying it is right, but it is what happens. SullyLax is correct in saying that since it was an off-campus event, the University should for the most part stay out of what happened. At risk of sounding harsh, the girl who got sick drank at her own risk. No one shoved a beer in her hand and said "drink until you get sick." It's about self control. Yes, people do get sick at parties, but most of them hold themselves accountable, they don't go run to #1: Their parents, or #2 the administration and blame the lacrosse teams (or the persons accountable for the party) for their irresponsibility. Being at college is about being responsible. You are an adult and should be expected to act in that manner , therefore knowing when enough is enough.
Sorry, but I've lately noticed this trend in our nation of people pointing fingers at other people when something goes wrong. This is just another example of how people don't take responsibility for their actions and the consequences of their actions. Such is the case w/ UMD.

Laxchc are you agreeing with me about the drinking thing? I cant really tell.
I understand that parties and drinking go on off campus in college. Hell, when I get there I cant say I wont do it myself. What I was trying to say is that I feel these kids should have been more mature and responsible and realised the implications of their actions and held themselves in check.

I am in college and I don't drink at all. I also know people that I never thought would drink but do. I've also meet people that I was sure drink but don't. My best friend drinks and I don't, but its cool between us. Overall, yes drinking happens in college and it won't really stop. You just have to make your own judgment and be resposible in the way you drink. About what happened at Maryland I think the crime fit the punishment. They knew what they were doing when the decided to drink and they got caught. Now they have to deal with no fall ball. Simple as that.

i'm a senior in HS, and i don't drink at all period. sure my friends do, and the parties i go to have alcohol at them, but its all about self control, and learning how to know your limit. A HS in my district. the girls had a party a few days before the regional champ game, and they got suspended, and so naturally they lost the regional title, which they had a 99% chance of winning. It was their fault for drinking and getting caught, and I think that the UMD plyrs deserved the punishment that they recieved. Even if soemthing happens off of campus, and the school finds out about it, they still have the right to intervene their little asses into it.

I didnt drink at all throughout high school and freshman year in college, FYI. Now, concerning "promising not to drink." If you are college lacrosse player and are not specifically what we like to call a "dry" team (a team that the coach has made or the team has voted to not drink at all during the season), then the only rule you are bound to follow (beside the law if you are under 21) is the 48-hour rule (You cannot drink 48 hours before a game, and if you do you face suspension from the game). What happened with UMD was not a 48 hour rule... heck, it was technically before classes even started AND off campus. I'm not going to beat the off-campus drum here, because arguing it isn't going to do anything here. I just want to know why UMD felt that THIS was the time to do this. This exact thing happens at college all over the nation, this is not new. No matter WHAT school you go to people will drink underage, it;'s a fact. I don't condone it, but it happens. I'm just having a hard time figuring out why this has happened now w/ this team and at this college. I also guess I'm fairly frustrated because the freshman involved did not have the common sense to stop drinking when she felt it getting out of hand. Once again, when you go to college, you are expected to act like an adult, aka have self control. Oh well, Guess every college sports team (esp lacrosse) will now party "in fear."

yeah....plus the womens team didnt get into as much trouble as the mens team right? i dont know it happens at every college. i mean look the d1 player of the year last year was one of the biggest weedheads i have ever met. It doesnt make people any worse but its just a desison they make. Some it doesnt affect but there are some that it does. look at any highschool team taht has had there season F*cked up due to people doing dumb stuff. My team last year had an All American get kicked off due to team rules about not smoking weed. We also had another face off guy get kicked off. people just need to knwo that they arent just affecting there own career, they are affecting others.
