I can't comment on how widespread it may be but Japan does field a National Team that has been competing in the top tier bracket of the World Games. There have been videos of college club teams on e-lacrosse. Keio U fields a club team (if they still do).

We also have a member in the USMC stationed out in Okinawa who regularly laxes it up (his name escapes me so I hope he sees this chimes in for you).

Lacrosse in Japan is quite big and is growing at a great speed. Don't quote me on it but i believe Japan as a nation has the most the lacrosse players after the US and Canada.

These kids may just have been from a part of Japan were lacrosse hasn't taken off yet.

I was in japan for a month in the summer of 05 and I took my lacrosse stick with me and I didn't see anything about lacrosse while I was over there. Nobody playing it, no ads, no stores. And I got made fun of because the guys I hung out with said "isn't lacrosse just a girls sport" haha. they said that lacrosse isn't very popular there and where it is, it is mainly girls who play.

that was summer of 05 though so i dunno

In Japan its kinda mostly seen as a preppy girls sport, at least in the highschool level.

Most knowledgeable ppl know what lax is, but they dont really know how lacrosse is played, the rules, etc.

I've seen kids with lacrosse sticks on the train on the way to school in Japan and i got really excited but didnt have the balls to say anything lol

I got invited to play on a California All Star team that's going to Japan this summer.

I got invited last year too, but I didn't attend. However, I heard that their U-17 and U-19 teams were decent, and their U-21 and U-23 teams were LEGIT. I had a close friend who went, he said they'd just spin the ball until they lulled you to sleep, and then stuck one to a wide open crease guy for a goal. From what he said, they have incredibly sound fundamentals (he told me that their national teams practice like 320 days a year), but lack the flash and creativity of Americans and Canadians, which is understandable since lax is so new there.

I'm going to Japan this summer with my family (the main reason I declined to play on the all-star team), and I'm bringing my stick. There's bound to be at least one kid who plays.

Lots of great lacrosse in Japan. However, almost all start playing while in college.
Not many (if any)H.S. programs.
Check out http://www.lacrosse.gr.jp/ and www.samurailacrosse.com (the photos tell the story)

As USMC_Lax said, almost all start playing while in college and a few keep playing after graduate.

The biggest area is Tokyo. There are 2000 players play in 41 men's college, 3000 players in women's college, 400 players in 15 men's club and 600 players in women's club team.

Most of national team players are from club (both men and women).
