i was thinking about getting a wooden pole, but i have no clue what type of wood to get. I would want one thats light enough to move quickly, but still able to have the pain and durability that is expected of wooden poles

Hickory is probably the best, It IS alittle on the heavier side, but it will last you forever.

A titan classic D-pole weighs approximatly 450 grams. The hickory pole above would weigh around 600 grams (wood is never consistant, you may get a heavier one or a lighter one, but it would probably only differ about 20 grams.. which is next to nothing).

The site I had posted above is a very reputable site. On the top left of the site you can order them (hit the order button). You can only purchase them in Hickory. If I were you, I would go with a Clear stain with it.

www.talonlacrosse.com has good wood/composite mix shafts, but, in my opinion they are extremely expensive for what you get, still they are quality. My friend has a Talon Beast, and I must say, I can never see this thing breaking, but let me tell you; It is EXTREMELY heavy. Unfortunatly it's $205

The Talon Protector 60'' is maybe what your lookin' for. I have seen one, and held one, but have never used it--so don't take me to seriously right now. It is much lighter than the beast, and might be what your loooking for, but I don't know anything about the durability. Plus, it's $190

Some people on here have used Red Oak, only thing I know about it, is that it isn't nearly as strong as hickory, yet it is lighter.

ash is mainly what baseball bats are made out of and they are pretty dang strong but for the most part lightweight

I'd go with Hickory. I have a dpole from Hickorylax.com and i love it. it's not too heavy, but definately heavy enough to turn on the painn. it really hurts gettin hit with this mother. leaves marks. but at 14 yrs old i can whip this baby around the field one handed or anything. it's great. i highly recommend it.

Ive got a hickory one from hickorylax.com as well. Hickory wont flex as much as ash, but in all seriousness neither will break very easily.

My personal philosophy regarding wooden poles is to make em yourself by the half dozen, then the cost is cheap, you arent worried about one breaking, and who knows, somebody might buy one off of you. Theres one kid on my team whos made stupid money selling cherry sticks to kids, for upwards of $40 each. If I could find a place locally to sell ash or hickory id be all over that business, but alas, the cost of my shaft is cheaper than mail ordering lumber.

a well made wood shaft will snap any alloy shaft any day....it has more mass...wood is great and if your not a noodle arms it wount bother you too much...you can do some serious damage with a wood pole...and don't get a woodrow or any other gimmicky warrior piece of junk

you are 100$ right ive seen the damage from wood shafts and why would anyone get a woodrow there 3 times as much as a real wood shaft and a wood shaft would snap it in 2

its actually not stupid at all, a lot of people do it
its stronger, cheaper, and barely heavier than a metal shaft

and a woodrow wouldnt settle anything?

i am almost done with my hickory pole and it feels sick, and it is not that heavy

but i would recomend hickory

Thanks for the nice write-up, Lacrosse4life31...

There is a lot of information about strengths and weights, pros & cons, a very good story about why you should at least give wood a try some time in your career, and some very recent testing results. Ash, Oak, Purpleheart are all good for shafts. I'm convinced hickory is best -- especially for d-poles. give wood a try, whomever you buy from. I think you'll like it.
