Okay so i have heard numerous times that your mouth guard HAS to be attached to the helmet. But i have always used a mouth guard that has nothing attaching it to the helmet? Is this a new rule that I was just unaware of or is it still okay to use one that doesn't attach to the facemask.

No such rule in NFHS/NCAA rulebook, maybe a local/youth modification though.

Then how do refs tell if a kid doesn't have a mouth guard in? With the exception of it sticking out on top of their helmet.

Mouthguard does not need to be attached to the face-mask. This is a myth. Unless you keep your mouth clamped shut--which we'd be fine with, BTW--we can see your mouthguard of a highly visible color other than white or clear.
But it is easier on us if it's attatched to the facemask.

BTW, the comment about keeping your mouth clamped shut wasn't to you in particular, but just that we like it when the players don't jaw at us all the time. Looking back at it, it looks a little snippy, which wasn't intended. I was trying to be funny. :whyme:

Generally we can tell it is not in your mouth when you are chewing on one end with the other end sticking up in your face, or a comment comes across with a clarity not possible with a mouth guard in place.
I do not understand why players don't go to their dentist and have a custom mouth guard made. They cost $20-25.00, and allow very good verbalization while protecting your brain (concussion prevention is the main reason for a mouth guard) and teeth. Custom colors, too!

We have a team rule that they must be attached.

LaxRef, at a game yesterday the Refs wouldn't let one of our players play because he had a clear mouth guard. They said "no clear or white mouth guards, we shouldn't be able to see teeth when you smile." My mouth guard is also clear, but with black trim...including on the front. Is my mouth guard legal?
It's very very similar to this (http://www.blackhawkmartialarts.com/images/BH14583.jpg)

It might be technically illegal, but to me the reason for the rule is so I can tell you are wearing one. I can tell that with this model. However, that doesn't mean every official will interpret this the same way.

I love this!!! All the discussion about mouth pieces, we have the same discussions in the football forums too, is this legal, is it not!!! Coache/players, just go to your local wholesale sportings goods dealer and buy a group of blue, yellow, green, whatever color complements your uniform color (just not all clear or all white) and fit a few and put the rest in a zip lock bag in your bag for the guys who don't do it. About 3 yrs ago, I bought 20 blue ones (2 kids playing lax and football in the house) still have a supply and they were less than a dollar a piece. Way too simple to go to all this discussion for something to protect your brain!!!

I have seen them sold at concession stands at games during tournaments really cheap. My response to that has always been that they could sell them for $20 each because, if you need one at that particular moment, price is no object.
