Same here (except with a FutureShop gift card). I just hope there'll be a good multiplayer/online, because in my eyes that's what sets apart a good game from a great game.

Could you imagine it to be like WoW where you team up to do missions? Or just see 100 people trying to jack the same car, or fight for the same taxi?

Multiplayer won't be MMO style but will support up to 16 players according to R*. But multiplayer I'm not all that interested in. I'll check it out, but the GTA series has always been about the single player experience (or just random time wasting, which never gets old in this series) and too many games try and tack on a frivolous multiplayer (though I don't think that will be the case with GTAIV) to extend a shortened single player mode, or squeeze an extra hour or two out of replayability or vice versa, skimping on the single player experience over a solid multiplayer, which leave nothing for people who don't play online or when the internet is down. I'd rather a game do one well and leave the other out if not needed, but some developers are getting better at it, especially considering the newer $59 price tags that come with the higher production values. Everyone wants to feel they get their money's worth.
I reserved my copy today. I was out at lunch looking for a new console game (I also just picked up Crisis Core: FFVII for PSP, if you're a fan of that series and have a PSP it's awesome) and decided I'd rather wait and get GTAIV than plop down money on any other game at the moment. There are few games I will spend full msrp on nowadays, mostly waiting for price drops or seeing what deals are available on half.com before those price drops ever occur (reason being my statement above, most games today are too short on replayability save for a few to be worth full price unless you are a diehard fan of the series or every review out there commands you to get the game ASAP).
At the least this will tide me over until MGS4 comes out in the summer, but as always it's GTA so it should be good for a 15 minute random crime spree to stave off boredom or release stress.

Shut up. A game like that would be illegal. It'd be far too much fun.
Now you've got my hopes up like no other.
If they could get GTA to be MMO, the world would probably end.
But if they did, I wonder how they'd police it. Obviously, there'd be gangs and stuff, but how do you prevent people from just killing everyone? Unless they mean that if you die in the game, you just come back and lose money or something, which would suck, because then there'd be no point in killing someone from a rival gang, if they were just going to come back anyways.
stinisonfire
04-01-2008, 09:47 PM
Well, do you think it would be like any other online shooter (except 3rd person) or would missions be involved?
If it were MMO, I could see gangs and such being involved, but it would be no different than say clans from Halo or COD4.
There would obviously have to be a cap on the limit though. Could you imagine a 30 person drive by on a gang house somewhere? That would just be outlandish.
How cool would it be though to take like 5 of your boys and go take on another gang in a park and you control "that turf".
Man, why am I not in R&D?
ROCKSTAR, ARE YOU LISTENING! I'M A GO-GETTER!

max of 16 players. there will be game modes such as racing and games of that nature. I think there will e co-op mode but only limited to 2 players. I also hear they have a game mode they are trying to keep secret until the release.

I'm' glad its back to New York
Personally I think New York is way over used in video games.
It's a little annoying now that I think about it just because there's always something to do with the subway system, the Statue of Liberty, etc.. in every New York game.

ZOMG!
http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/ptech/04/10/grand.theft.auto/
I've often asked myself what I would do without a cell phone. In "Grand Theft Auto IV," just as in real life, the answer is simple: not much.
art.grand.theft.gametap.jpg
In the new Grand Theft Auto game released at the end of April you can play in a team deathmatch with up to 16 people.
Just as Rockstar Games created seamless transitions in past GTA titles, jumping from the single-player campaign to the new multiplayer component is as easy as pushing a button.
You can drive in a 100 mph car chase with five cops on your tail. Walk down the street and admire the light shining through the arches of a bridge. Or jump off a 200-foot skyscraper.
Just hit a face button, toggle to "multiplayer," and the game jumps online and entirely new modes.
During our hands-on test time at Rockstar Games in New York the publisher revealed for the first time four new multiplayer modes (the total number will be more than 15), including team deathmatch, GTA race, cops 'n robbers, and hangman's noose.
Among those modes are options for traditional adversarial games (deathmatch or team deathmatch, for example), or co-op games such as cops 'n crooks and hangman's noose, where teamwork is essential.
We played the Xbox 360 version and didn't see the PS3 build. Also, representatives reiterated it will ship both versions April 29.
Don't Miss
* iReport.com: Review "Grand Theft Auto" games
* GameTap.com: "Grand Theft Auto IV" single-player preview
* GameTap.com: "Saints Row 2" in the shadow of GTA IV
GTA IV supports up to 16 players (on both PS3 and Xbox 360) online, and each mode offers enormous customizations specific to each mode. In team deathmatch, you can set up an equally balanced eight-on-eight battle or a lopsided two-on-14 fight.
You can pick a custom or quick game, and party leaders can tweak options to alter each game significantly: You can change weapon types (all handguns for instance or only snipers), add or subtract police, traffic, pedestrians, or blips (i.e., enemy location).
New strategies are created by the addition of enemy blips and the cover system, enabled by pressing the right shoulder button. Enemies show on screen while moving and disappear when stationary.
The amount of times I snuck up and shot an enemy dead was matched by the times opponents jumped from hiding to tan my behind. I also was able to tweak the reticule width, gamertag display, weather type, daytime, and control even voice chat options.
"If players want they can jump online and never even play the single-player again," Jeronimo Barrera, vice president of game development, told GameTap. "Online is a serious time sucker. You're going to have to be really careful if you're married," he added with a smile.
The online game is split into two types, ranked and unranked.
Many developers find gamers are wary of playing ranked games because skilled players lay in wait for newbies. But the reward for ranked players is cash. Cash is earned by winning levels, and it earns players more character customization options.
More significantly, cash awards are accumulated throughout a persistent career, which is how Rockstar "ranks" your skill level.
While the single-player campaign doesn't support co-op like "Gears of War," a good example of cooperative opportunities to earn more cash is found in cops 'n crooks, which enables up to 16 people to play in two distinct teams.
If you coordinate with the whole team and get your boss character from point A to point B, your team earns more points than if only a single player (and the boss) got there.
Likewise, the higher difficulty level that's selected (from easy, medium, and hard), the more money each win earns. When you're not playing as the crooks escorting a boss, you're the cops in pursuit.
Sometimes co-op play is as simple as charting a map. Players who jump in an escape car but aren't driving can set on-the-fly way points using the on-screen map. If your GPS buddy is map savvy, he or she will lead you through town using the most direct route, which appears on screen for your team.
GTA Race is ripped straight from previous GTA single-player campaigns. Up to 16 people can play in a no-holds barred lap race to the finish. But like past GTA games, cars are destructible, and drivers can arm themselves with pistols, machine guns, rifles, and more.
This means you can drive any car, moped, or forklift you see; heck, even walking across the race line even counts, as long as you're first. As our three-hour session revealed, it's just as much fun preventing others from crossing the finish line and disrupting their racing lines with Molotov cocktails and grenades as it is to win. (Another mode Rockstar casually mentioned was GT mode, which is a straight weaponless race.)
Sticking with tradition, no cars are licensed, but fans can pick from car classes, and in each class, they can pick from familiar favorites such as Infernos, Turismos, Comets, and Supercars, to name a few.
Hangman's noose is part of a collection of co-op, objective-based missions engaging four humans versus a countless AI horde.
Each mission starts with a cutscene, is followed by a set of goals, and requires teamwork to achieve success. These ministories aren't part of the single-player game; they're random. Our mission opened up with an unending stream of SWAT police (called "noose" in GTA IV) driving into an airport runway, flanking and surrounding our team.
The object was to survive the first few waves of noose attacks, secure a vehicle, prevent Kenny Petrovic from dying, and get to the designated location. Within seconds of jumping into a car, the difficulty level increases, as multiple helicopters swarm the skies. Cop cars congregate setting up road blocks, pedestrian cars get in the way, and, in the medium and hard levels, GTA's trademark orchestrated blend of chaos, skill, and madness ensues.
Rockstar's multiplayer mode debut is a first for the series. The four modes we played show Rockstar North has made the hard transition past its successful trilogy, offering an impressive variety in gameplay types (more than 15 modes total), hundreds of custom options including character creation, and the organic integration of full world online maps including vehicles such as cars, boats, and helicopters.

If anyone has been following the news of late EA's still pursuing their takeover bid of Take Two (extending the deadline by 2 weeks per this mornings WSJ).
However as of late Take Two has done 2 things. Their annual stockholder meeting voted to turn down the offer (prior to the deadline extension) and assure all of us gamers, whether you hate EA or not, that GTAIV has gone gold was on the trucks and on its way to stores as we speak.
Say so long to those delay rumors... (http://http://www.gamespot.com/news/6189477.html?action=convert&om_clk=latestnews&tag=latestnews;title;1)

I do hate EA, but only because they don't promote competition.
For anyone who doesn't know, when a game has "gone gold," that means its been produced and is ready to be sold. Once you go gold, there won't be a release date extension.

QBYattackmen15
05-03-2008, 11:37 PM
yeah the story is very nice. really keeps you playing along very smoothly. People complain about the driving, i dont mind it. because its not like your opponents/cops can drive any better. on that subject, i LOVE the new way to get away from cops. while before if you got even 2 stars you would have to(might as well kill your self just to get out of it, now if they catch you you can just drive out of the zone and wait a quick second, then get on with your business. awesome idea and a great fix to a rather annoying problem.
i do have onequestion though, im not too far in the game because im nt the kind of player that egts a new game and plays that one thing and one thing only, i still play COD4, Gears, and Rainbow six vegas 2. but is it possible to find gunshops and hardware stores liek last time, because right now i only have stuff on my map that has been included in missions. which includes a stripclub, food places, bowling alley etc. etc. but no gun shops or anything like that. and i dont feel like murdering a civilian with a firearm/police officer for his gun when i run out of ammo. so if someone could tell me where these places are so i could find them, it would be helpful, thank you.

I've got $780,000 and im 72.5% done. The actual story mode ends at like 65% though so i guess you can say i beat the game. Its a fantastic game and i'm hooked. I like the fact how you get to choose what you want to do in some missions (i.e. killing someone or sparing their life, who to kill, take the money or save roman) which determines how the story line goes and different things you get in the game. Its a great story line and it really takes a long time to beat the game unlike other video games. I also dig the cellphone future which is pretty cool. I started using the cheats after i beat the game and theyre pretty fun to use. I like flying the copter around and finding easter eggs and hidden tricks in the game (i.e. going inside the Statue of "Hapiness" and seeing its heart beating.) I havent played online much but i really havent had the chance to because of the problem below...
Is anyone else (xbox 360) having the problem where the disc is unreadable after about 10-15 minutes of game play? It happens to me everytime i play online or single player and i cant get it to stop
