View Full Version : Delay of game?

Ten minutes before game time, and the home team is still not on the field. They're on another practice field at the school, far enough away that we can't see them, but someone tells us they're there.

We go ahead and certify the visiting team coach. With about 5 minutes until game time, the home team gets to the field. I explain to the coach that we'll certify him and conduct the coin toss as quickly as possible, but that if the opening face doesn't happen by the scheduled game time it will be illegal procedure on his team for avoidable lateness of team.

He tries to tell me that there's no set time he has to be on the field or have his team on the field.

So we do the coin toss, then call the teams for the line-up. Repeatedly. Home team comes out, but not the visitors. I turn on my timer and yell "Timer's on," but the visitors proceed to have the entire team sprint the width of the field. Then sprint back. By now I'm calling them for delay of game and awarding the ball to the home team, and the visiting coach gives me attitude! :whyme:

LR, I lost the thread somewhere. Not sure which team is running wind sprints.

If the home team ignored multiple requests to come out for the line-up and the visitors were lined up, then I'd give possession to the visitors.

If the visiting team decided to run wind sprints instead of coming out for the line-up and the home team were lined up, then I'd give possession to the home team.

If both teams were messing around, then I'd call them both for IP and award per AP.

Visitors were running sprints; you're right, I wasn't clear. I did give the ball back to the home team.

What can you do? Some coaches are knuckleheads.

On a simlar note, how many times have you had your buzzer go off at 1:40 of a timeout, so you blow your whistle, click your timer, and yell, "Timer's on," only to have one team go into a huddle and a long team cheer?

Timer: Beeeeeeeeep!

Me: "Illegal procedure! Delay of game!"

Coach: "Huh?!"

Idiot coaches. THey want rules called when it is their favor but not in their opponents favor. Call them as you see them and don't worry about the attitude or "HUH".

I did this for years when I was an HC. I either warmed up out of sight or inside just to get in the heads of our opponents. I would always send my captains out at the 10 minute mark. Because we play JV/V doubleheaders here in VA, I would certify during the JV game when the refs had a chance....

And that's all fine. But you'd better be available to certify and your captains better be available for the coin toss!
