JV game last week:

A1 scores a goal late in 1rst period. Between 1 & 2 qts it is determined that A1s stick is illegal (3 min NR). I take A1's last goal off the board. At the half, A's coach asks that the goal be placed back on the board as a face off had occurred before the period ended and the stick was checked.

I realized that the coach had waited too long before asking for a conference due to a misapplication of a rule (before the next live ball), but felt that we had in fact made a mistake in taking the goal off the board as the period did not end with the goal.

So, I put the goal back up and while it might not have been technically correct it seemed to me to be the right thing to do.

Once the game is restarted you can't go back and penalize something that happened before that whistle.

A1 scores. Then there's a FO (ensuing whistle). Period ends. A1's stick is found to be illegal. A1's goal will still stand.

But the question is whether disallowing the goal incorrectly is a correctable error. I don't think the rules give us much guidance here, but I think the right thing was done here if not too much time had passed.

It would be different if the goal had been disallowed in the first quarter, then just before OT the coach tries to get you to correct that error and declare his team the winner.

I think you did the right thing - correcting an official's error. While the Correction of Errors section of the NFHS book just covers the newer double-horn situation, the NCAA book gives a little more latitude and direction, and I always employ the principle of what is the "right thing" to do. In this case it is an obvious error and I would have no problem making the correction. I would tell the other coach I would give him the same consideration under the same circumstances.

In this case though the refs had made an egregious mistake. I think he did the right thing.
